“Civil Peace” is a story of faith. It is a story to which I know that the events and experiences that the main character, Jonathan, experiences can directly relate to my own life, as well as my opinions on my view of the world. “Nothing puzzles God” (Achebe) is what Jonathan says continually throughout the story. This shows his opinions on what has happened in his life so far, and how he feels he should react to what happens. For his great amount of faith is shown throughout the story, and I feel as though I am much like that of Jonathan.
This text of “Civil Peace” has an abundant amount of meaning to me personally. Throughout the book with Jonathan experiencing so many wrong things in his life, he does not stay angry or upset over what had

When you decide that you are going to put God in your life and are going to trust what He has in store for you, you are going to be able to move on with your life with grace as situations arise throughout your years of life. Jonathan, in this story, shows this entire view on faith through his words and actions. His constant faith through the war, and later on through being robbed, shows to be a great example as to what exactly it means to have this strong faith in God. He knew that he was lucky because of how God was looking over him in his life, so he knew that he had nothing to actually "worry" about throughout the times of hardship that him and his family endured.
Faith is something that is extremely important to me. If there is anything that I can be certain of in my life, it is that my faith will remain constant in my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have found through reading "Civil Peace" that Jonathan seems to portray this same mentality. His faith in God through the terrible times that him and his family endure shows just how strong he actually is in his faith. Because of the fact that faith is so extremely important to me, this characteristic that was shown by Jonathan stood out to me more than anything else in the

I found that once I started reading this work of literature, I did not put it down until it was read completely from beginning to end. Achebe does an excellent job at portraying a story that displays this strong display of faith through a man and his family. I found that I could relate to this story wholeheartedly, and because of this I was interested in the piece for every bit of it. The overall attitude of Jonathan gave me a sense of understanding, and I could see where the way that I felt regarding faith and what happens in my life was identical to that of
Faith plays a big part in the book “Night”, by Elie Wiesel. Elie seemed to have more faith in humanity and God than those who were older than him. Yet when when he and his family enter the concentration camps that faith disappeared. The faith he had in God, Humanity and including himself were gone.
The Epistle of James lays out why faith without good works is meaningless. James, the half- brother also tells us to obtain wisdom through full faith in God, and to persevere through the trails that every Christian faces. The author uses Christ as an example of how to be a Christian who has faith with good works.
Faith in Christ has given me a unique life filled with optimism and purpose. From a young age, I have been raised in a home where I was taught about the love of Christ. Not only at home did I learn about Christ, but at school and at church. Thus, my life has been filled with experiences that have amplified my faith. For example, when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I found that my relationship with Christ grew. Through all of the difficult circumstances that I have faced, faith in Christ has given me the encouragement that I need to persevere through any situation. Additionally, faith has influenced my decision making, which is why I strive to make all my decisions and live my life according to faith-based principles. This means
Faith is something that everyone should have. Faith isn’t something that you can just throw away and expect to get it back in the future easily. No, faith is something that can't be gained easily once lost. In the book Night, a boy named Elie starts to lose faith as days pass while he is in the concentration camp. He loses faith in himself, and others. Elie losing faith could be a really bad thing that could’ve resulted in him harming himself.
John Knowles’ “A Separate Peace” takes place at a boarding school during World War II. Best friends Gene and Finny have been inseparable during their time at the Devon School. This is until reality hits Gene, and he slowly starts to realize that he is inferior to his best friend. Through the unbalanced friendship between two teenagers in “A Separate Peace,” Knowles illustrates that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power.
The missionaries came and told people, like women whose twins were left to die in the forest, that they don't have to kill their children the next time they have twins if they join them and their religion. This made many people think that they took the evil people out of the tribe but in fact they were gaining power by getting a lot of people to follow them. For example, there was a girl named Nneka who had, several times, given birth to twins who were thrown away. Achebe says, Nneka had had four previous pregnancies and childbirths. But each time she had borne twins, and they had been immediately thrown away. Her husband and his family were already becoming highly critical of such a woman and were not unduly perturbed when they found out she had fled to join the Christians. It was a good riddance. This shows us the Achebe understands and is not surprised when the women fled with Christians. We can see that because when he says that her family was not "unduly perturbed when they found out she had left", this tells us that he didn't really care about the people who left. He understood why they left but as he said it was a "good riddance". As we see, it is highly
"There is no such thing as love anymore, / the kind that is so strong / that you kind of feel it in your bones. / you know we used to feel that emotion / when we looked into the faces of our mother, / father, sisters, brothers, family and friends...This novel is dedicated to the era in which we live. / The era in which love, loyalty, truth, honor, / and respect died. / Where humility and appreciation are nonexistent. / Where families are divided and God reviled, / The era. / The Coldest Winter Ever."
The discussion of religion really started to churn thoughts in mind. It was interesting to me how the author brought up the role of religion on the battlefield. It amazes me that conflict as far back as the civil war branched from the topic of religion
Faith is having a strong belief in something or particularly God. In Night, Elie loses faith in God gradually throughout the book. In the beginning of the book [before the Nazis came] he had strong faith in God. Elie said,
Someone's faith is something that is supposed to stick with you through everything, it is supposed to help find the light of things when it is dark. During the Holocaust prisoners went through hell itself, the Nazis put the Jews through every kind of pain and it as hard for them to keep that faith that they possessed. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Wiesel struggled to maintain faith in his experience on the way to Auschwitz, witnessing meaningless deaths and a family members loss.
Faith is something all humans want to believe they have. Faith can be religious, and everything in between. Faith gives people hope, especially in the darkest and hardest of times. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, Eliezer experiences loss in his religious faith, questioning god and his quietness. Throughout the book, Eliezer's faith slowly diminishes as the years pass, wondering whether or not god will assist him in his times of need. Even the people who have the strongest faith, will question it in times of hardship
The challenge of faith is to trust the Lord to bring that kind of peace into our lives. Jesus promised, I will be with you always Matt. 28:20; I have prepared a place for you; I will give you rest. Faith challenges us to accept and depend on His promises. That is where the command to be obedient comes in. Joshua was given a specific task to get up and cross the Jordan that required his obedience. The Bible teaches that to obey is better than sacrifice (1 Sam. 15:22).
What is faith? Scripture tells us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Faith means trusting that various situations will provide results best suited to help us in some way during our life. I’m sure others may have a different opinion; however, throughout my life, that has been the most accurate description.
Achebe’s essay “An Image of Africa” analyzes the book Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. He dissects the false representation of the african people and the bias in his book. In “Heart Of Darkness,” Conrad feels that the people of Africa are undeveloped and they are savages; he looks at all their culture and tradition and only sees it as uncivilized, he has no appreciation for their beliefs. This relates to Achebe’s book, Things Fall Apart, because Conrad’s views represents the white colonist and their feelings towards the africans. The colonists did not respect their culture or their gods. Okonkwo is well-respected by his tribe, he is extremely traditional and values his culture. The colonists are a threat to that because they do not understand or respect the African ways, they want to change it and convert them to Christianity. Okonkwo has a need to stand up for his culture and his beliefs, he feels he has to be able to prove that he is a strong and powerful man. Okonkwo worries that if he does not protect his customs, he will be seen like his father: cowardly and feminine. He has been haunted by that fear his whole life, “It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. Even as a little boy he had resented his father’s failure and weakness, and even now he still remembered how he had suffered when a playmate had told him that his father was agbala”(Achebe 12). His need to distinguish himself from his father and protect his people are what drive him to make do things like kill Ikemefuna and the messenger. Things fall apart for Okonkwo because the other villagers do not have the same passion and drive as him. The
What is faith? Faith is something different to everyone. If you asked a hundred different people, it is possible that you would get many diverse answers. Religious faith and non-religious faith are two very distinct terms. Faith holds an extremely complex meaning when discussing it in the context of religion. Faith is a belief. That holds true to every religious and non-religious person. Every faith involves a decision. It is not about what we claim to believe, but what we actually do believe, that is true faith. Throughout this paper, I am going to discuss Christian faith, how it pertains to daily life and Christianity as a whole. I also intend to delve into George W. Forell's discussion of Christian faith and analyze and
