Thurman,
Fascinating article that you have chosen! As Janice states in her reply, the idea of immortality is no stranger to the theater. Imagine, the longer lives of the mythical vampires but no drinking blood required! I am unsure how I feel about the prolonging of our lives, as people. On one hand, our past history is full of shorter lifespans, but due to advancements in medicine and hygiene practices we continued to live longer like we do today. This may be similar to the times where we all lived to the ripe old-age of thirty, or died during childbirth. On the other hand, it is all just another step forward, and it is
The novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This works genre is fiction. The text was inspired by a real murder that took place in Columbia in the 1950s. This novel took place in the 1950s in a small Colombian coastal town. The first sentence in the novel informs the reader that Santiago is about to be killed to build suspense and curiosity.
In “On Natural Death,” Thomas appeals to the readers by contemplating the subject of death with an academic approach that includes facts, data, and information. Thomas successfully transforms death from an awkward, emotional subject to a more comfortable intellectual one. This engages the readers by placing contemplation of death and dying within the confines of a more manageable and rational context. His gradual exhumation of death eases the audience into pondering the subject in the absence of emotional stress. The essay transitions from the death of an elm tree to that of a mouse. This is followed by Thomas giving a significant amount of attention to a scientific explanation of death, and then finally the description of the near death experience of a human. This use of an academic appeal moves the audience to a comfort zone with the subject of death and circumvents the common response of avoidance. The reader is simultaneously desensitized to the gravity of subject matter and given permission to consider death and dying without the normal societal negative stigma associated with the subject.
All in all, in my opinion, immortality is worthless. With immortality comes selfishness. Immortals seem to take everything for granted because they know they will most probably experience it again. I think living a mortal life is the best and people should stop wishing to be immortal. Mortality is able to bring out the best in life. With mortality people only have so long before they are gone from the world and with that little time real happiness is discovered through all of life’s hardships. In the end death is both a hardship a beautiful
With a respectable argument against the idea of pharmaceutical advances eventually leading to immortality, Lexchin uses multiple forms of rhetoric, mostly logos, to sway the readers. He sets our deep fantasies of someday being able to live forever against our rational minds and backs up his case with sound logic and viable examples that leave us no doubts about human limitation.
Lee Nudelman was deposed on December 21, 2016. Below is a summary of his testimony.
The most important aspect of the Latin American culture has everything to do with honor. Women have the biggest responsibility when it comes to honor. Bethune started a school in Midway where the more progressive blacks lived. He mentioned how the community was very strong and the only dividing factor was denomination. In every area of common life there
person an extra 200 days to live. In his article he states “We are fed, daily, and the hopeful news: fatal
In this essay , I will present and compare both sides of the debating argument of immortality.
Housman utilizes the elegiac form to illustrate death as a triumph over the pain of an athlete’s fading glory, and he develops this idea by using images of victory and death. He first depicts death as a doorway, and as the athlete passes through, he “hold[s] to [its] low lintel up/ The still-defended challenge cup” (Housman 23-24). In lifting his trophy at the door of death, the athlete becomes an image of everlasting triumph, as there is no longer the possibility of his defeat. The depiction of death as a threshold also suggests that it is merely a passage from one stage of life to another, diminishing death’s finality. Housman then calls the athlete a “[s]mart lad, to slip betimes away” (Housman 9), for “ . . . early though the laurel grows/
Traditionally, women have been known as the less dominant sex. They have been stereotyped as being only housewives and bearers of the children. Many interesting characters in literature are conceived from the tension women have faced with men. This tension is derived from men; society, in general; and within a woman herself. Kate Chopin‘s short story, “The Story of an Hour”, focus on a woman’s dilemma near the turn of the 19th century. Contradicting the “normal” or sad assumption of death, “The Story of an Hour” illustrates the significance of death representing freedom. The Story narrates about an hour of Louise Mallard’s life, as she tries to understand, and deal with her feelings of her husbands death.

Living for ever is an idea that must stay in the movies. I don't think we should spread that idea because it gives people false hope. The Calico project aims to cure cancer, prevent disease, and eventually make people immortal. After reading Ben Popper’s article on the Calico project in the Verge magazine, I remained with the opinion that finding new treatments to diseases is a must for our future generations. However, making people live forever is overly ambitious.
I would place The Graveyard by Neil Galman in Frye’s schema of satire. Frye has four schema’s that make up his archetypes. Comedic and Romantic come under Comedy and Tragic and Satire come under Tragedy. I believe that the graveyard comes under the satiric (ironic) branch of Frye’s theory. This is because the book’s premise is based on an ironic concept. The main character Jack murders all the members of the Dorian Family except the toddler. This toddlers somehow leaves with Jack as he travels back to the graveyard. Here the toddlers is met by various different demonic creatures. There is a werewolf, a vampire, a ghost just to name a few. These creatures then proceed to raise the toddlers in the graveyard. It’s ironic that the toddler is raised
If someone closes their eyes and imagine if someone discovered a formula that would enable us to live forever. What would it feel like to live forever? The “Fountain of Youth” was a desire that people died trying to find. The “Fountain of Youth” is a place people tried to uncover in the sixteenth century. The myth claimed that one drink from the fountain would make you immortal. This formula would ruin the generations to come in America. Immorality would be a curse to this great nation.
