Ethan Couch ,a teenage boy, after drinking heavily with friends got in the drivers seat of his pickup truck and started driving. While driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.24, with the state's legal limit for adults being 0.08, he accelerated to speeds around 70 MPH, where he lost control and sideswiped a broke down SUV then continuing on to kill four victims, injure nine others, and crash into the back of another pickup truck. He pled guilty to four counts of intoxication manslaughter. His attorneys claimed that he suffered from affluenza, and the reason he drove while intoxicated was because he didn’t know any better due to the lack of parenting he had because of his parents wealth. I disagree with that statement because whether his parents
According to this study, nearly all drivers were intoxicated and admitted. If all drivers were forced into a jail cell, there would be shrinkage in both fatalities and automobile accidents. In fact, “Almost half of all drivers who were killed in crashes tested positive for drugs and also had alcohol in their system” (Johnston, O'Malley, Bachman, and Schulenberg 1). So why should any offender remain free? According to “Drunk Driving Accident Statistics”, “Three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives” (5). To guarantee the safety of innocent people on the road, all offenders must go to jail immediately.
The shocking incident that occurred this weekend with Senator Frank Weston (Age 54) was unforeseen. Senator Frank Weston was involved in a car accident early Sunday morning at 3:54 Am after being at the local bar. He was accompanied by his intern, Kristina Thompson (Age 19) who said that Mr. Weston was giving her a ride back to her house. Mr. Weston was measured to have a blood-alcohol level of .161 (legal driving limit is .08 or under) and Ms. Thompson had a blood-alcohol level of .122 and was drinking underage. Mr. Weston was arrested at the accident. Mr. Weston’s 2013 silver Mercedes Benz that he had been driving suffered front-impact damages after a witness reported that the car swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2005 Honda
In //Ethan Frome// Edith Wharton illustrates how Ethan views Zeena versus Mattie through the parallel scenes of when Ethan is greeted by Zeena/Mattie at the door of his farmhouse first coming home from the dance and second coming home from. Although both scenes play out almost identically, Wharton uses the slight differences to emphasize how Ethan sees Mattie as beautiful, submissive, and attractive compared to Zeena who he only sees as an obstacle. As Ethan comes up to the door the first time when Zeena waits for him, he is so infatuated by Mattie that Zeena has become but a hurdle for him to overcome. He even dreams about if a dead vine dangling was a"crape streamer tied to the door for a
In Ethan Potter’s quote in chapter three of the book “The View from Saturday”, “Had I gained something at Sillington House. Or had I lost something there. The answer was yes.” This is very much true, but how? He asks about what happened to him at the Sillington House. He thinks that he has gained and lost something there at the same time. The quote probably means something more symbolic than it looks like on the surface. Well, let’s start with the character, Ethan Potter. He is quiet and doesn’t have a lot of friends. These are all negative traits. He just might lose these traits and gain other ones. So it is possible to gain and lose something?
Not every DWI (driving while intoxicated) case ends the same, some have different verdicts in the courtroom. The Ethan Couch case is a great example of why punishing drunk drivers should be more enforced and not so lenient. The teen from Texas was driving drunk with two other passengers in his pickup truck on June of 2013, when he hit and killed four people. Ethan Couch was tried as a juvenile and charged with four counts of Intoxication Manslaughter, but was only sentenced to ten years of probation. His lawyers argued that it was due to “affluenza”, which means that he came from a wealthy family and it prevented him from understanding what was right from wrong, so he was not held accountable for his actions. The judge who took on this case
“Chance takers are accident makers,” said by The Fresh Quotes. His parents knew what he was getting himself into, but why didn’t his parents stop it? Ethan Couch, a teen alchoholic, who tcreated a drunk driving accident and killed many innocent people isn’t facing any jail time. Now this is upsetting so many people around the country, and I couldn’t agree less. The,”Ethan Couch”, case has prompted many people to discuss social issues such as bad parenting and alchoholic abuse.
Now a day, driving while intoxicated has become America’s deadliest crime. There were more than 11,000 alcohol-impaired deaths in 2008, sadly those death were preventable if we had more severe Laws against this issue. Drivers are well aware of the Laws and consequences against drunk driving, especially after destroying families due to their carelessness decision. Victims’ Families entire life are ruined because of the sudden death of their loved one, and they are never going to be able to reclaim their normal life, while the offenders after a few days in prison reclaims he’s normal life. As a result of our fragile criminal justice system everyday road users share the road with repeat offenders who are highly resistant to change their
If he had just acted his age he would have either asked someone to drive him of gotten a taxi to go home, and avoided the whole incident and not had to go to court. He was 16 years old at the time of the case so he would have known what he did was wrong. The final issue with the term Affluenza is that the term itself gives rich people the right to say that Affluenza was the cause of their crime. If Affluenza is to be used as a valid excuse for a crime then other people would be able to create their own “special” reason for why they did their crime.
To be noble you must possess high or excellent qualities. In the novel there are many examples of Ethan Frome being a noble person this is evident throughout his relationship with Zeena, Mattie, and other characters. Ethan put his life on hold and has always been there for his family especially Zeena; however, after Ethan and Zeena married she became ill a year later which put a negative effect on their relationship. Zeena became asexual and a very boring person.
In January of 2015, student athlete Brock Turner sexually assaulted an intoxicated, unconscious woman. In June of 2016, Turner was sentenced to a mere six months in prison. The reasoning of such a short sentence being it would have a “severe impact on him, [and his father argued that] a kid’s life shouldn’t be ruined…because of 20 minutes of action”(Dockterman 2). This argument is one that is often brought up in recent culture. Teens or young adults who are convicted of crimes such as sexual assault, driving under intoxication, or other similar types of crimes are often let off the hook. This defense used is known as “Affluenza”, or, as defined by Matt Gutman of ABC News, the idea of being “too spoiled by [one’s] parents to know right from wrong”(Gutman 2).
The novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton tells the story of Ethan Frome and the tragedy he faces in his life. The story mainly focuses on the relationships between and among Ethan, his wife, and his wife’s cousin, with whom he is in love. Wharton uses different literary devices to develop the plot, including irony as one of the most effective. The use of irony in the novel, especially in the climatic sledding scene, greatly adds to the development of the tragedy.
In recent years, there have been many cases of the rich “getting away with murder.” One example that I absolutely love is, Ethan Couch. All at the age of 16, Ethan Couch was driving under the influence of stolen beer cases. When he killed 4 people and injured 9 people all together. Couch was then indicted with 4 charges of intoxicated manslaughter, but the judge only gave him 10 years of probation. Since it was argued that he had “affluenza.” Affluenza’s dictionary definition is “a psychological malaise supposedly affecting wealthy young people, symptoms of which include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of isolation.” This basically gave him a get out jail free card, since his parents were too rich to teach him to be a
Drunk driving has had a major effect on the U.S. It has caused many deaths that have affected many people and their families. There are many teens that have been intoxicated while driving. It is not just in the U.S., it happens all around the world and it needs to be stopped. I think that Ethan Couch did deserve time in prison because he had a major impact on the lives of many people especially the victims families. He also should not have been driving while intoxicated.
And plenty of drunken Indians have killed other drunken Indians” (158). Junior’s grandmother was struck and killed by a drunk driver. It’s also states out the fact that many Indians when they get drunk can kill another person without notice what they have done is wrong. The fact that Junior’s grandmother should died because of the old age is more suitable and acceptable than being hit by a drunk driver. Accidents are not intentional, however, the criminal try to get as drunk as possible and his unconsciousness has lead to this unfortunate scenery. Spokane Indians such as Gerald, the drunken driver, only thinks that it doesn’t matter how much alcohol they drink, as long as they can take themselves home safely. However, the consequence of their action may result the death of many innocent victims who should enjoy the rest of their life, instead of burying under the ground .It claims that one drunken person can kill another person or maybe a group of people if there is a car accident.
How much longer will we be forced to endure the pain and atrocities due to the carelessness of drunk driving? Drunk driving has been a problem in the United States since the introduction of automobiles; however, it did not become an important social issue until the 1980’s. At that time the political atmosphere defined crime in terms of personal choice and individual responsibility. Drunk driving was defined as a problem located within individuals. Drunk driving is illegal in every state. It is not only illegal, but unsafe to operate an automobile if you are under the influence of alcohol.
