Everyone in Firoozeh’s family has a “reputation” that stays with them for their whole life. When Firoozeh is 11, she says that she wants to go to camp. Naturally, Farshid (who has a better reputation: in kindergarten in Abadan, he was “popular and charismatic”) is turned to on the subject, and he finds an expensive camp 8 hours away from Newport. Kazem takes Firoozeh to buy a sleeping bag and other stuff, though he’s very cheap. He buys a sleeping bag that’s so huge that Firoozeh can barely carry it, so they have to put it in a trash bag. A few months later, Kazem takes Firoozeh to the camp bus stop. Firoozeh is worried about going to camp, but Kazem calms her down by talking about going to America years before. Everyone in camp mocks Mary and her younger brother, and secretly Firoozeh is relieved, because it means that nobody will tease her. She also decides not to bathe, since that requires getting naked in front of others, which she’s never done before. Instead of participating in the activities, such as archery, cooking, or horseback riding, she sits alone making key chains every day. The campers are supposed to put on a play: Fiddler on the Roof. Firoozeh plays the grandmother’s ghost, which requires her to be covered in baby powder. When the counselors apply the powder to Firoozeh’s body, they see that her body is so oily that the powder “clumps” on her body, and consequently, she looks like she’s been “dunked in a vat of bread dough.” After the play, she wants to take a shower, but can’t because she can’t stand the thought of getting
