Karl Marx is a classical theorist whose ideas currently apply to a majority of society’s problems, as well as the manner a society functions and the way it is structured, which is comically explained by George Carlin. Carlin is a comedian known for his “dark humor” and thoughts on politics, religion, psychology, and exceedingly taboo subject matters. Carlin is also known to be a Marxist and applies many of Karl Marx’s theories towards his comical approaches, such as in the comedy special, “Life is Worth Losing”. In this particular special, Carlin mainly goes over the concept or philosophy of the “American Dream”, and applies the topic in relation to the problem of communism, contradictions in capitalism (commodity fetish, alienation, exploitation, surplus labor, commodification,) and the problem of class and false consciousness. Each theoretical concept has a connection to the present issues of our society and the problems people have when it comes to how they view the world, starting with communism.

The “American Dream” is a veil that a majority of people is obscured upon, thinking that every citizen has an equal opportunity to be prosperous and successful through hard work and determination.
