The topic of my paper is “Great by Choice.” Collins’ and Hansen’s book provides us the tools that we need to manage through chaos. “Great by Choice” is a detailed book on how some companies have managed to be successful during hard times in our country. This book was started behind the question “Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not?” The main subjects in my paper are centered on comparisons versus 10Xers, 20 mile march, and luck. Another topic is on the CEOs that were in charge of these companies and how they managed and mastered the art of a successful business. There are some issues that I had with the book. I felt the authors ' conclusions were too broad and that many of their theories were too difficult to disprove. I feel that the authors did not give enough justification for the choices they made in coming up with their results or conclusions. That being said, this is still a stimulating book that shares skills that include not making quick decisions and the best leader is not always the one who takes the most risks or is more creative, but is instead more disciplined and more paranoid. Collins and Hansen started with a list of 20,400 companies and had 11 layers of cuts to identify cases that met all their standards. Only seven remained when they were finished. The two “10Xers” that I have chosen to discuss are Southwest Airlines and Progressive Insurance. I was surprised to see an airline company listed among the other
