In “Salvaging the Self from Homelessness”, David Snow and Leon Anderson argue that while people living on the streets have an obvious social or role identity, they sometimes struggle to find their personal identities. A social identity is an identity given to someone by society. If a person sees someone else living on the street, they will most likely be identified as homeless. A personal identity is an identity people assign to themselves to give meaning to who they are. Snow and Anderson continue by studying how homeless people attempt to create a personal identity. Homelessness is deemed a social problem because of the many social factors that could play a role in it. “Social forces such as addictions, family breakdown, and mental illness are compounded by structural forces such as lack of available low-cost housing, poor economic conditions, and insufficient mental health services” (Chattopadhyay, et al., 2013). Since there are many contributing factors that aid in homelessness, it has been deemed a social problem.

In paragraph two, John Lewis states his views over the fact that “Unless Title III is not put in this bill, there is nothing to protect the young children and old women” and explains how the bill is useless in serving to protect the black population from discrimination and prejudice. To illustrate his idea that a better government is needed, Lewis provides examples of victims he knew or was friends with to let the audience sympathize with his fight more, and Lewis criticizes the government for not doing their job and protecting everyone. In making these comments, Lewis urges to the listening audience to help them increase the number of people who are fighting for their rights not only colored people, but whites as well. John Lewis begins his historical speech by addressing their reasons for the march and how they have a tough road ahead of them.The description on the first line of the first paragraph is a perfect illustration of foreshadowing. The reason is that it specify for what they will be talking about and why it must be changed. That is to say, How Lewis believes that it isn't right to just get paid inequality. From this statement, readers can infer that there is some determination within Lewis to deliver his message out to the world. To further illustrate this theme, of challenging the society and the politicians who are trying to stop them. The author describes, the unjust in wages, and one day they will end up in jail just because of their skin color. In other words, Lewis believes that the economic system does not even give them to feed themselves but not even a whole family. John Lewis implies one has to be strong and stand by the people who are fighting for their freedom. The assignment that really inspired me was writing about the video, From Homeless to Howard, where we learned about peoples perception, and stereotypes. I would like to say that watching the video with James Ward was amazing, he’s 19 and his perception of the world is a lot different from those who had never been homeless or had to carry adult duties at such a young age. During the video, I tried to imagine what my life would have been like if I were homeless and so young. I know that my perception of the world would be a lot different. The things that I complain about now, wouldn’t be my biggest issue. Surviving while homeless would be my concern.

When you see the homeless what do you think about? Do you see them and feel disgust or are you someone who wonders how and why they are where they are, or maybe, you are one of the few who want to help and who are able to. In the U.S., more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year and that number is growing. They are families with little children, people who are trying to escape domestic violence, people with mental illness, veterans who have served our country, and many more. From what I read in Jonathan Kozol’s “Untouchables” city officials in various places are only coming up with short term solutions, that aren’t helping the homeless. City officials are just trying to get rid of the homeless from their cities or area. I think it’s time that more individuals and groups, really gets involved and figure out a way to help those who are already homeless, and stop future people from becoming homeless. We have to come up with ways to help the homeless readjust and get back into the world.

John Lewis starts arguing about how the African Americans need a good FEPC bill that will protect them throughout work or it can help them gain more money with what they do as a job. Lewis reminds the audience that if the legislation doesn’t give a bill than many sharecroppers or workers won’t be safe anywhere, “We must have legislation that will protect sharecropper who is put off of his farm”. Homelessness is a serious problem in our society. Every night in our nation thousands of people are on the streets. This type of behavior is considered deviant because it does not reflect the norms and values of our society. In many cases the homeless people in our country are treated as total outcasts. Many of these people have severe mental disorders. Some are victims of an economy that has failed them. One may ask how such harsh situations exist in such an advanced society. With all the money and programs created to help people it seems ridiculous that this behavior exists. In a society where people have so much how is it possible that there are still people that have so little. The homeless are humans, no different than anyone else.

Homelessness affects millions of Americans each year, with approximately one third of this population suffering from severe mental disorders. In Las Cruces we have a number of homeless people that have a mental disorder. Las Cruces does not provide the homeless mentally ill with sufficient services. it is necessary to provide them with support, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Homeless written by Anna Quindlen is an essay describing the problem of homelessness in New York City. Quindlen writes about a homeless woman named Ann that she had met at a bus terminal. Quindlen was in the process of writing a story about homeless people and was very interested in Ann’s situation. Ann on the other hand did not believe she was homeless and showed Quindlen a picture of a yellow house she kept in her tote that had no exact location. The general statement made by author Kristin Lewis in her work, “I was Homeless,” is that it is difficult to get out of homelessness. More specifically, Lewis uses Kevin Liu’s story to depict the hardships faced by those who become homeless. Quindlen soon understands that a home can not just be replaced by a shelter but a home is where the heart is. The homeless stand down was an eye-opener experience for me. I had the opportunity to interact with several individuals, and one family. Initially I conducted some interviews with them to help complete the questionnaire; and the remainder of the time, I escorted the individuals and helped them choose items that were necessary for them. As I talked to each of them, I realized that the present state of these individuals were a product of the current economic situations.
