Words are extremely powerful. There are millions of words to use but, choosing just the right ones can leave a huge impression. A strong message can spark new ideas and provoke motivation and inspiration into countless minds. One of the most impactful speech in all of history is the “I Have a Dream” address by Martin Luther King Jr. It influenced and affected millions of people, worldwide. Another person who used the power of words to their advantage is Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. He was given a command of a regiment during the Civil War. In the course of his command he was sent a group of one hundred and twenty mutineers and an order to shoot them if they refused to fight. Colonel Chamberlain’s speech and treatment of the mutineers reveal aspects of Chamberlain’s personality. The way Chamberlain addressed the prisoners shows exactly the type of person he is. Three traits of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain particularly stand out while reading his speech to the mutineers. The first trait that Colonel Chamberlain possesses, which made itself known through his speech, is his empathy. In the text it states, “I understand your problem. I don’t know what I can do about it. I’ll do what I can”(Shaara 8). Chamberlain is addressing his prisoners in this line and it shows that he understands their position. There isn’t much that he can do to help them at the moment, but he cares about their opinions and is willing to help their situation in anyway he can.
