If You’re Reading This by Trent Reedy is a story about a boy whose father died in Afghanistan. On his 16th birthday, he receives a letter from his father, which would be the beginning of a whole series of letters and videos that his father wrote while in Afghanistan. In one of these videos, Michael’s dad describes Christmas Eve. He says, “Some of their ideas are different, like there’s no manger or bright star or anything, and it’s just Mary without her Joseph in their version, but we just set all that aside and worshipped God. The same God. I wish the world could stop fighting and we could all get along as easily.” That quote comes from a section of the book where Michael’s dad is describing how he and the rest of the people in his unit
He later befriends a young kid named S.J Tuohy and later S.J.’s mother and father take in Michael as one of their own. The Tuohy’s then become Michael’s legal guardians. As time goes by Michael had picked up on football and he was now determined to go to college. He is accepted into University of Mississippi and later goes on to play in the NFL. This story is relevant to the quote because being homeless was Michael's rough point, but he later is taken in by wonderful people and gets to have a real chance at a good
In “Writing to Read”, Graham and Hebert present the results of studies, which where thoroughly analyzed, in order to support the importance of writing instruction towards the development of reading skills. The report, however, was not created with the simple purpose of making an argument. Through the use of meta analysis, it recognizes the most effective approaches in order to aid teachers in developing and applying effective strategies.
This is my book. It’s by Matthew J. Kirby. It is about 3 children named Giuseppe, Hannah, and Frederick. Giuseppe is an orphaned street musician, who earns money each day to give to his master by playing his violin. Giuseppe thinks that he will never be able to go back to his home in Italy until one day he finds a green violin. When Giuseppe plays the green violin, he can earn more money in 2 songs than a whole day of playing with his normal violin. But his hopes are shattered when his master finds the green violin. Hannah, a strong willed girl, is a maid in a grand hotel. With a sick father, Hannah struggles to earn enough money for her whole family to survive on. Her life is one of the constant struggles until she meets a new guest at the hotel and learns of a mysterious treasure. The new guest “Mme. Pomeroy” hires Hannah to become her personal maid as she was on the verge of being fired. But Hannah steals a diamond necklace in order to pay for her father’s
“The Christmas Story,” by Langston Hughes shows the day Jesus was born into the world. Based on the poem by Hughes, he believed in Jesus. The poem also explains everything about where Jesus was born and his circumstances that night.
This concept of referring to religion is somewhat ironic because most modern day writings that I have read really do not imply religion events. Granted Christmas is wintertime and the author could be referring to it as a description of the setting. Also I found the Grandmother lives in a village in Perrault’s story. It was of the times to have small villages everywhere rather than today where there are large metropolises and dying country life. While Carter’s rendition has the grandmother living deep in the woods. Probably implying how Carter might fantasize about escaping to country life deep into the deciduous forest. The way a story reads is a big difference in finding out about the writer’s purpose.
While both Miller and Rose in the Crucible and Twelve angry Men agree that fear is an evident motivator they also differ to some extent. Arthur Miller suggests that fear of power is the most important whereas Reginald Rose is saying that the characters fear the unknown. .
While interviewing Michael we got to talking about traditions and holidays. Watching Michael’s eyes light up while talking about his childhood traditions and holidays reminded me of my own. He told me of the different holidays such as a holiday called “Fasching” which started on a Monday and lasted through Ash Wednesday. Michael described it as an, “ongoing party” with carnivals, and parades. On December 6th, St. Nicholas day was another dearly beloved pastime. “All the good little boys and girls would polish their shoes and leave them outside of their bedroom and St. Nick would place presents inside their shoes (Heidenreich).” Lastly, the one I thought to be the most interesting was on Christmas Eve. For my family on Christmas Eve we all get new Christmas pajamas. It’s like getting one gift before the big day, it somehow holds us over until Christmas morning. Well for Michael, he had to work for his Christmas. He was expected to pick out a different Christmas poem every year and memorize and recite it to his family. Michael laughed at the memory, “If it wasn’t perfect my parents would send me away until I had it down perfectly. Once I could recite it perfectly, I would receive ONE gift. Just
Christmas can have many meaning to different people depending on how they interpret it. However, if looking at the Christian aspect of it. The
To begin, the history of Christmas is peculiar and filled with factors that make it well-known all throughout the world. It’s history goes all the way back to 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Jesus was born in Bethlehem from a virgin whose name was Mary. In a stable, where shepherds visited, along with everyone who heard, a miracle happened and the holiday came to be. As time continued, Christians have been swept away from the celebration’s natural meaning, background, and origins.
In addition, all passed generations of the Morocho have all been catholic because of their belief and faith in God and Jesus. The Morocho family has all turned to God and Jesus in time of need and thanked Jesus for giving them everything they have. An essential part of being catholic is children have to be baptized, do their first communion, and confirmation. Going through baptism, first communion, and confirmation give them the fundaments to learn more about their religion also how to communicate with god. Oscar a member of the Morocho family stated, “I learned the importance of believing in my religion and I pray for my whole family and I, using what I have learned in religion school”. In the Morocho’s Family parents sign their children up to be part of the play of Jesus birth in Bethlehem.” Through religion school they learn to say prayers and make the sign of the cross that is used in mass and in the mass of Christmas Eve. Lourdes said “We praise Jesus on Christmas because he is the Son of God and did so many things for us for example he sacrificed himself for us”. All in all, purpose of practicing religion on Christmas Eve is to honor Jesus’s birth.
Now, flashback almost two weeks. Since the Coptic calendar is arranged to celebrate Christmas on January 7, this would be around the time of Western Christmas. Tensions in Egypt were on the rise, and the Coptic community could sense that something was going to happen. Unfortunately, something did. On New Year’s Eve 2011, twenty-three Coptic Orthodox Christians were killed in an attack on a church in Alexandria and a hundred more were injured. Despite the attack taking place over five thousand miles away, I felt that they were not only
Christmas is the annual festival celebrating the birth of Jesus on the 25th December, at least that is what it began as initially. Since it has expanded into an international phenomenon for consumption, taking priority over our everyday practices of life (Michel De Certeau, 1980). Our time we spend divided between work and leisure in accordance to the codes and conventions of society shifts, Christmas derails these expectations. Yet surprisingly Christmas gains little attention in terms of social research, despite the fact that it can be explored diversely. The inquiry ‘What is Christmas?’ links to multiple aspects of social research. The aspects of Christmas can be subdivided into the following; religion, commercialism, gift-giving, social relationships, sensualism and mythology. This essay will analyse these fundamentals of Christmas through both psychological and sociological perspectives, as the theories among these two social sciences are best suited to the elements which make up Christmas itself.
It can be argued that Christmas as a holiday is far removed from the way it was first envisioned. That said, there are certain element that many people share or celebrate making it an arguably complex holiday. As the preeminent children’s author of his generation, Geisel serving heavily on the minds of his young readers helped shape what Christmas means for many people with his narrative How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Though at the surface the work is a simple morality tale that promotes unity over consumerism, it has subtle nuances that make the work interesting on several
By mid-century, Christian groups began to ignore their religious differences over the meaning of Christmas and honored the day in special
This quote shows us that Michaels brotherhood with his friends is really strong and he is willing to run up the hill to get a radio signal to send for help, so that there is a chance that his friends will survive, even if it meant that he would be killed. I liked this because Michael was ready to die, if it meant that his brothers in arms could live.
