The essay "It's Not Talent; It's Just Work" by Annie Dillard is an informing and persuasive essay to readers. Dillard is persuading people to work hard by comparing life to a show. For example, in paragraph 6 it states, " I don't think there's much danger of coming to the end of the line. The line is endless. I urge you to get in it, to get in line. It's a long line, but it's the only show in town" Dillard is basically persuading readers to work by saying to get a job before they are all over. Before the job you want or need is gone. Dillard persuades people to drink caffeine as well. In paragraph 1, Dillard says," Doing something does not require discipline, it creates its own discipline-with a little help from caffeine." The author
Some people are naturally gifted with peak athleticism and talent, others are not so gifted, however everyone is gifted with the opportunity to work hard. Mick in Carl Deuker’s Gym Candy illustrates the following. Mick is a diligent athlete who has dreams of making it big in the NFL. His father was once a fabulous football star, but failed to meet his expectations. His father, haunted by his failure, is determined to work Mick hard, so he doesn’t end up a bust like him.
In the book GiG Americans Talk About Their Jobs, include 100’s of interviews of different people with different jobs that provide personal achievements, and goals that give these individuals the strive to work. These reasonings of why we should work point out much more than money being the outcome. Each individual interviewee has a different reason for why they work, what makes them strive to work, what makes their job’s worth going to each day. From selected interviews “Wal-Mart Greeter”, “Clutter Consultant”, “Lobbyist”, and “Orthopedic Surgeon” each represented different reasons of work;the four that stood out most to me included: Self-worth, appreciation from clients, political belief goals, and mental fulfillment.
I learned how to take notes as I progressed through the years of school. By the time I had reached high school, however, I knew exactly how to properly take notes to achieve success in my classes. In the article, A Learning Secret: Don't Take Notes with a Laptop, Cindi May speaks about the disadvantages to taking notes with a laptop. The author mentions that taking notes with a laptop causes students to write verbatim versus summarizing and making bullets if they were written by hand. May is trying to say that studies show taking notes on the laptop are not nearly as effective if they were simply just written out.
1) According to Dillard, lovers and the knowledgeable can see well. Yet she also suggests that those who are knowledgeable on a topic, such as people who have been blind from birth and can suddenly see (due to an opperation), can perhaps view more objectively the world around them, and see it in a way that those with vision from birth cannot. Infants, she says, can see very clearly, for they are viewing the world for the first time, and can observe the colors and the light with no prejudgments, but we forget this experience as we grow older, and only occasionally catch glimpses of this phenomenon.
Just like Us by Helen Thorpe was on systematic study of four young Mexican women growing up in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado with two of the women living in the country as legal residents and the other two living as undocumented. The definition of sociology is defined as “the systematic study behavior and human groups.” (Scheuble, 2014). Thus definition and can be directly applied the Thorpe’s novel and specifically to the illegal immigrant status of the girls. Throughout her novel she explores situations and problems that occur in America specifically relating to illegal immigrants. For example Thorpe goes on to write about how Yadira was forced into purchasing a fake social security card through the black market. After Raúl Gómez
In life, hard work will always pay off. For example, in the book Scat by Carl Hiaasen, a character named Mrs. Starch is a hard working person. In connection, in the story The Three Little Pigs, the third pig works hard to build the brick house so it won't get huffed by the big bad wolf. In this essay, I will prove the connection between Mrs. Starch and the third pig. Mrs. Starch changes Duane because, she sees that if she puts in all her effort, then he can be able to pass Mrs. Starch’s class. Another evidence is that when Duane had to write an essay about pimples, he got an A- because, Mrs. Starch tutored him. “ But it says here I got an A-.” Mrs. Starch nodded. “Correct. If you hadn't misspelled ‘endocrine’, I would've given you an A.”(pg.
It is also easy to manipulate a person using such a motivator. Money, a stable life, and a promise of happiness; these have always been promoted by society as the things to aim for. There is so much pressure on achieving these things that people forget about intrinsic goodness, and focus only on instrumental goodness. This veil of perception deceives people to think that working towards instrumental goodness is the only way to achieve happiness or stability in life. ”When you close your eyes, be sure that it’s your dream that you’re dreaming/ Don’t have to quit your job or find a new career, but just be aware of the snare” (Jones 63-64). Jones uses the aforementioned quote to inform the reader of his or her possible reliance on extrinsic motivators, that may have been indoctrinated into his or her mind since early childhood. In the same vein -- albeit with a less irate tone -- Kohn highlights the issue by giving examples of students doing traditionally leisurely activities for their instrumental value, motivated by extrinsic factors. One of the instances he mentions is of students joining clubs, not for fun, but because they think they would look impressive on their
America’s higher education system has an interesting history. It has advanced substantially since it was established. Unfortunately, its beginnings were based on slavery and cultural genocide. Craig Steven Wilder’s book Ebony and Ivy gives insight into the intriguing beginning of America’s colleges. Wilder focuses mostly on the impact and treatment of both the Native Americans and African Americans within the beginnings of colonial universities, but within these statements, one can see how dramatically the American college system developed in these early years. The book has excellent reviews. In an article posted on December 1, 2014 the African American Review states, “Ebony and Ivy will change the way we think about knowledge-creation at America’s universities…Craig Wilder’s masterly work will stand the test of time and should be required reading for college students across America.” In a Washington Post article published in 2014, Carson Byrd says, “Ebony & Ivy is a meticulously argued work and a valuable resource for multiple disciplines. It strongly connects slavery, science, and higher education to explain how racism is built into the foundation of our colleges and universities. A few of these connections are described below.”
Kewuanas passion allowed her to overcome Kewuana Lerna used passion, perseverance, and creativity to achieve success in challenging classes. Firstly, Kewuana used perseverance to stay on top of her grades. For example, Paul Tough, author of “How Children Succeed”, states that Kewuana went three nights without sleep so that she could study (Tough). Thus, by sacrificing her sleep to study, Kewuana persevered. Secondly, Kewuana was passionate about studying. For instance, Tough reports, that her most difficult subject was Biology. Therefore, her hardest class. Thirdly, Kewuana applied creativity to help her learn and study. To illustrate, Tough tells us, that Kewuana would put red stars next to words that she didn’t know, so that she could go
Studies have also demonstrated that distraction has a similar effect on people’s susceptibility to influence. We all know that caffeine helps keep us alert, but can it also make us more persuadable? To investigate this Pearl Martin and her colleagues asked participants of their study to drink a drink resembling orange juice. The researchers had spiked the orange drink with caffeine before giving it to half of the participants. Shortly after drinking the juice, all the participants read a series of messages containing a good argument for a position on a controversial issue. Those who consumed the caffeinated drink were 35% more likely to agree with the statement than those who had not had the caffeine. However when this was tested with a message with weak arguments the caffeine had little persuasive power. The findings of this study could be beneficial to choosing when to present a pitch, a good time to make a presentation would be early in the day when clients may have had a morning caffeine fix. Or have coffee or caffeinated drinks to hand should make your audience more receptive to your
This stems from the amount of work needed done daily, and the feeling of not having enough time in a single day. These feelings lead students to consume potentially harmful amounts of caffeine. For example, Death Wish Coffee contains 660 mg of caffeine per twelve fluid ounce cup. The company even advertises it as having “200% more caffeine than in a normal cup of coffee.” The coffee itself has a smooth, and strong, taste to it, but can be harmful to those who do not have high caffeine tolerances. Red Bulls, and other popular energy drinks, can even be harmful to one who does not consume caffeine on a regular basis. Still Americans continue to consume these products, although potentially dangerous, in hopes that it will give them an extra source of
“To find yourself, think for yourself,” is a quote by Socrates that could relate to every young person. At one point in everyone's life, they have to find who they are in order to grow up, and that’s why I believe that Just Be Yourself! by Stephanie Pellegrin is the most significant rite of passage story for me. I think that I relate to Just Be Yourself!I because I have tried to get involved in multiple clubs, sometimes I think I even lost myself being disappointed I didn’t fit in, and I have spent grand amounts of time finding that one thing that I could be good at. I think that I am affected the most by Just Be Yourself! because just like the author, I have joined close to half a dozen clubs to see which is the best fit for me. Also, like the author, I haven’t always particularly liked the clubs I joined. I even quit the drama club
According to Smith (2001), he found that cognitive performance over the course of a working day was improved more in people who consumed above average amounts of caffeine than those who consumed less than average (Smith 2001).
Just like how modern technology is embed into the lives of students, caffeine also have become a necessity in student’s daily life as well. The workload of a college student can be overwhelming and it drive students to rely on caffeine. When they rely on caffeine for their body to function, they overlook an important aspect of their health conditions which is getting enough sleep. Losing sleep can make a big impact on a student’s ability to critically think, reason, and judge. Although, caffeine is consider a solution to any student’s struggle to overcome their fatigue. The beneficial aspect of caffeine can offer students to be at their optimal performance in their daily task. Caffeine, like a double edge sword, it can either help students accomplish their task or aid them in losing their sleep.
People would be looking for ways of to how to productively boost up their academics and sports throughout their day. For example, everyday many students may have experienced when they arrive at school feeling the need to have more time of sleep and throughout the day they mainly have not been concentrating on either on their academics or sports, so when energy drinks came around students would have less difficulty in sleeping during their school days. Young consumers had found out a way to increase their physical and mental performances and that is by consuming energy drinks. Youthful Americans who have experienced in drinking these types of beverages have mentioned that they have reported “positive short-term effects” on energy drinks. For some adolescents they have briefly mentioned that after consuming the drink it, has provided them focused and “mental alertness” but on the other hand it causes numeral side effects for drinkers such as experiencing headaches, stomach pains, difficult on concentrating and sleeping. Many do experience these side effects if they consume drinks that includes caffeine. These Americans who have imbibed these beverages have mentioned that they became very handy and helpful where there focuses on academics have increased, but many consumers don’t get to realize that these drinks can become very effective and unhealthy for your own body because of the ingredients that contains in these drinks. Mainly from genres of energy drinks may contain a
