Dagoberto Gilb’s short story “Love in L.A.” presents the idea of freedom and the challenges Jake overcomes to keep his freedom. At the beginning, Jake encounters traffic while daydreaming which leads to an accident with an attractive woman. Jake’s encounter with Mariana forces him to choose his freedom over getting the girl, and Jake decided to lie about his job, insurance, and stay in contact with Mariana after the accident. Throughout this short story, Gilb emphasizes Jake’s desire to have a carefree life, without any restrictions, not even have a valid license plate. Gilb uses traffic to describe how everyone cannot freely travel on the road, no different from the restrictions of traveling in life with a steady job, girlfriend, and responsibilities.
“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely” (Unknown). People change and grow because of the challenges and conflicts they have in life. A person I know that has changed and grown a lot from a conflict is my mom because a couple years ago she ripped a tendon in her back, and she had to get many surgeries and wasn’t able to walk for a while. She grew a lot from that experience and now she can walk and is still getting better. In “The Street” by Richard Wright the young boy narrator has to overcome his fears and fight some thugs in order to buy his mom groceries. He faces an incredible challenge that makes him have to change extremely quickly. In “First Love” by Judith Ortiz Cofer the girl narrator has a crush on a boy that is a couple

This story is written in the third person point of view. Although it is in the third person point of view, the story focuses on mostly Jake. The plot centers on the young and optimistic Jake. One day while driving in traffic, while day dreaming of a better life for himself, he crashes into another car. As he was pondering whether or not to drive away, he saw that the owner of the car was a nice looking woman; so he second-guessed speeding away. The main theme of the poem help i’ve just been run over by a bus by Gwen Hauser is love with a twist. Hauser compares having a relationship and falling in love, with riding a 3-speed bicycle and being bit by a bus on a busy Toronto street. Hauser effectively convey to the readers her message about the protagonist’s feelings and experience. It is a depiction of being on a sour side of love just after the end of a relationship. Furthermore, love is abstract and difficult to define, however, Hauser is skillful to use simile, personification, and the theme to express what love is for her and relay it onto the simple poem.
Love waxes timeless. It is passionate and forbidden and a true head rush. Marriage, on the other hand, is practical, safe, a ride up the socioeconomic ladder. In "The Other Paris," Mavis Gallant weaves the tale of Carol and Howard, a fictional couple who stand on the verge of a loveless marriage, to symbolize the misguided actions of the men and women in the reality of the 1950s, the story's setting. By employing stereotypical, ignorant, and altogether uninteresting characters, Gallant highlights the distinction between reality and imagination and through the mishaps and lack of passion in their courtship mockingly comments on society?s views of love and marriage.
The purpose of this line relating to the motif is to show the recklessness of people during the 1920s and how people behaved carelessly with cars and driving in general. This tells us about the characters and the attitudes they show towards new and dangerous lifestyles because the new generation is fearless and reckless with themselves and their money. This can also give us an idea of the location, since New York is famous during the 1920s for leading the way for a young and bold generation.
For the bulk of the mid- to late-20th Century, Eileen Chang’s name and literary prowess fell into obscurity as a result of events related to the Cultural Revolution and her own reclusion. In C.T. Hsia’s A History of Modern Chinese Fiction, he praised Chang for her use of "rich imagery" and "profound exploration of human nature.” In his book, he also claimed Chang to be “the best and most important writer” of mid-twentieth century China. One thing that remains constant in the ever-changing world of Cormac McCarthy’s dystopian novel The Road is the relationship between The Man and The Boy. The father and son’s bond is extremely close, especially due to the isolation they face on The Road, but it is filled with love and endearment, like someone would expect any relationship between a father and son to be.
