Reflective essay writing has made me realised what thoughts and emotions I have experienced since undertaking this degree. I was under the misapprehension that finding previous study in Aged Care quite easy to complete, that this degree would be as easily achievable. I did not take into consideration what was required to work with my peers.
The required use of discussion boards to assist in completing the unit initially, made me anxious and very apprehensive of their benefits. After completing week two’s discussion post about being an online student, I described how I had self-doubt in my abilities, specifically time management skills and the challenges of self-motivation and focus. Reading the strategies outlined by Topbaş (2009), affirmed techniques that I had already implemented however, it also explained the importance of summarization and discussion.

I can see that there is value from group exchanges (Fook & Gardner 2007, p.38). This is differing to my preferred way of learning in a solitary and logical manner. Throughout the discussion boards, not only did I find many students sharing appropriate and useful information but experiencing the same concerns and anxieties (see appendix). Being encouraging, contributing, asking questions and adding any topic related knowledge on the discussion posts (Cottrell, 2013, p. 251), created an opening to express my mistakes in order to relieve stress or in some circumstances inform others not to repeat my error. Receiving several responses after adapting this method proved to be an invaluable step in encouraging myself to contribute to other students posts
engage and learn even when not taking part in online discussions. The context of this
In conclusion, all indicators point toward active participation in online discussion a major factor in the final grade a student may receive. All stakeholders, including the facilitator, need to be actively involved at a high cognitive level. This activity increases trust that must be built within a community of learners.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
I have always prided myself on my thoughts and ideas; it is my ability to convey those thoughts through writing, with which I struggle. In highschool I managed to get by fairly well in my English class. We were primarily graded on reading comprehension, and so my poor writing skills had little opportunity to negatively impact my grade. I did not find this to be so in Writing 100, however. It quickly came to my attention that I would need to improve my writing if I wished to do well. I realized that in order to improve my writing, I would need to fix one of my worst qualities as a writer: my tendency to begin writing without properly understanding the prompt. This past semester in Writing 100 I have made an effort to fix this, and it has led me to become more intentional of the purpose of my essays, which, in my opinion, has helped highlight an intellectual depth that my work was incapable of displaying before.
Upon entering English 111, I knew I would be writing papers. However, I did not anticipate how much room I had for improvement. Throughout this term I have been enlightened with so much knowledge that I may have forgotten or have been exposed to for the first time. Certainly, my experience with essay writing has been solidified due to newfound knowledge of proper work citing, MLA standards and the steps of planning an essay. Perhaps, my time away from a learning environment slowed me down a bit, other times I feel as though I have an advantage due to life experience. An online environment has certainly been challenging but throughout the course I have provided solid work and consistent grades commendable of an A grading.
My experience in the writing process has been extremely humbling. My mother is a teacher, so as soon as I could speak, I was taught how to write. All throughout elementary, middle, and the first few years of high school, I excelled in English. This skill of mine was put to the test, and for the first time, challenged and criticized in AP English Language. I quickly learned that I couldn’t always follow the three-chunk, five-paragraph essay format and that restatement of the author’s ideas was not enough. English soon became difficult when I realized I actually needed to think critically. My confidence in my writing dropped dramatically. However in my time so far in AP Literature, I’ve come to realize that I am a talented writer, and that
According to Carr, Cox, Eden and Hanslo (2004), “students who focused on building knowledge and collaborative interactions had a superior average performance, as challenging online interactions promote understanding”. Interactive learning help instructors with the misconception students have on subjects, conceptual problems, and difficulties on topics. Immediate feedback from peers and instructors and social interaction built into the online discussions contribute to learning. (Collins, brown, & Holum, 1991). “Collaborative learning activities contribute to learning, critical thinking skills, a shared understanding, and long-term retention”. (Garrison, Anderson, and Archer, 2001)
I totally agree with what the author is saying in the text. It takes time to get a good product out even though we think some people are deep and wonderful they still have the same struggles that we have when it comes to writing. I like this text because it is realistic it is giving an account of first drafts from common day people and shows how it is even for professional writers have problems with. This point is important because as people we sometimes feel we are not as good or capable of doing something not realizing that the people we look up to have the same problems we do. Another point that I agree with the author on is that you have to start somewhere. Many times as writers we don’t know where to start when it comes to writing. That being said we will just sit and think for ten twenty minutes when we could've just been information on the paper and then editing it later. In addition I liked that the author used examples from his professional experience when it came to writing food reviews. By him using details like how he went to the restaurant and sat down with friends and took notes of what was said. This was good to me because it helps me connect with him and the things that he does to write his reviews.
One of the techniques I am going to use through out college is talking to
This is the end of my 8-week course for English 112 Writing & Research in Disciplines. Over the course of the class, I have grown and learned more than I actually thought possible about writing but there is still room for improvement. I came into this course, not a strong writer it’s not really my strong point and never has been. Although this course has taught me some various methods of writing a paper. For example, the last assignment where the paper had to be written in CSE format. It was difficult at first because I used to only writing in MLA or APA format.
Interaction adds to the learning that a student would not get if he was isolated. Collaboration with the peer group and facilitator motivates one to bring meaningful discourse to the discussion that will qualify each student as a scholar. Each scholar knows that a contribution must be made to reinforce the learning, trust, and maturity in the community.
I learned a lot throughout each io, learned about how each little thing that affected Suskind affect Grenouille. Grenouille was basically affected by the mindset of Suskind but also the setting in which Suskind lived. Suskind lived during the cold war an era in which everyone felt that the world was going to end. Suskind was effected mightily by this so he was probably thinking he was dying and that the world was coming to an end. Grenouille also wasn 't considered human because he also did not have a positive state of mind because the setting was always changing and different from all the other people in his world. While reading Perfume for myself I often viewed Grenouille like Society did, as a freak who shouldn’t live on this earth. But these orals helped me understand how I was judging and not accepting just like society was towards Grenouille. I wouldn’t like to be judge either for all my flaws or just because someone says I’m not good enough. Yet society still had some sort of sympathy towards Grenouille even though they viewed him as a monster. Grenouille was a normal human that walked on the same earth as every other human. He just wanted to be accepted and loved like everyone else.
When you assess someone else’s work, you engage in a process of understanding it at a deeper level, which also improves the product of your own work” (Martin, et al, "UNIV 1001B: Learning Guide Unit 3", 2017). “Both synchronous and asynchronous online discussions are an important component of effective distance education. They allow for the students to interact with each other without being in a classroom. In online discussion environments, students are able to build strong ties and relationships with each other. Online discussions can be presented in different ways and serve students for different purposes” (Al-Shalchi, "The Effectiveness and Development of Online Discussions",
As a student, in the beginning of my professional career, writing reflection seems a sensible idea to record learning experience. The early stages of any career would play important role in learning as one settles into the ways of profession. The complex part is recognizing such experience and implementing on practice. In this reflection, I will be discussing about the role play we have had last week in our classroom. Gibbs (1998) reflective cycle will be utilized as it illustrates a clear structure for the process of reflection which includes six main stages; description of the event, feelings, evaluation, description (analysis to
Before I came to college, I felt my writing had to follow a certain pattern and be fixated around one way of thinking. What I was fortunate to learn was quite the opposite. Writing does not have to follow any certain pattern, but can rather be structured through many different possibilities. I was also told in high school that my papers either had to agree or disagree with the given topic, even if I believed otherwise. This formulated a very one-track way of thinking when it came to my papers. Now I know that I can let my mind explore new and exciting ideas. I can agree, disagree, compliment, criticize, and question the author however my heart desires, as long as I have the evidence to back myself up. Many authors in the book, Writing About Writing, explain their processes as well as the processes of others when it comes to writing. As a writer, I can draw on my own processes and relate them to the authors, as well as use their ideas and apply them to myself. Through reading, I have learned new methods of invention, planning and revising, and incubation when it comes to writing. All ways I can use to create more meaningful and creative work.
