S.E. Hinton is commonly referred to as one of the best authors of all time when it comes to teen literature. In fact, she received the Margaret A. Edwards award, which honors authors who have written novels that capture the hearts of young adults and provides insight to their actual lives. Being a young adult myself, I can honestly say that she is my favorite author of all time. Her other works including The Outsiders, That Was Then This Is Now, and Tex helped initiate my love for English in school. Even though my love for S.E. Hinton and her work has always been a constant in my life, I began reading Taming the Star Runner with very high hopes and was left disappointed. X by Ilyasah Shabazz is set in the mid 1900’s before equal rights laws were passed and an extremely difficult time for Black America. The book starts in a small town in Michigan called Lansing where the main character, Malcolm Little, who is described as a poor teenager in a large family. Malcolm is independent and introverted in the beginning. The book soon explains that Malcolm lost his father early in Malcolm’s life causing Malcolm to be a natural leader. Malcolm gets out of his home town as soon as he can moving to Boston, Massachusetts with his step sister Anna in hopes to become a new man. In Boston, Malcolm makes friends with a character named Shorty. Shorty leads Malcolm around a suburb of Boston called Roxbury. Malcolm gets a new name,

There are a good bit of characters in this book. There is Brian (the main character), Brian’s mother, Susan, Haley, Carl, Brian’s father, Caleb, the pilot, the two fishermen, and Billy. Where this is taking place is in a small town and in the woods, but is mostly talking about being in the woods. Brian use to live in the woods by himself. He comes back to a town to finish up school and has to part his ways from the woods.

The book takes place in the wild west of Wyoming. The character of the Virginian is introduced in Medicine Bow when on business. While in Medicine Bow he plays cards with a cowboy named Trampas. Trampas accuses the Virginian of cheating to which the Virginian pulls out a gun in the effort to stop the accusations. This causes Trampas to develop a hatred for the Virginian and that’s when their rival began. Throughout the book there is conflict between Trampas and the Virginian eventually leading to the Virginian killing due to a threat that Trampas made toward him.

Hinton is about a 15 year old boy named tex, who loves his horse Negrito. Tex lives with his 17 year old brother Mason and their pop, who hasn’t been home in five months. Wherever Tex goes there is trouble and he is usually with his best friend Johnny Collins when it happens. These decisions fall in Mason's hands because their pop isn’t home to do it for him without their pop Mason is pretty much Tex’s father and has been his whole life pretty much. Masons and Tex’s relationship changes alot throughout the book.

The book is told from the point of view of a little girl named Jean Louise Finch, or as many of the townspeople call her, Scout. Her father, whom they call Atticus, raises her with her brother Jem. A majority of the book deals with the trial of Tom Robinson, during which Scout begins to understand that not everybody is as fair as Atticus, raised Jem and her to be.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in 1903. This novel is basically a coming of age story for a young girl named Scout and her older brother named Jem. Who grows up in a time where racism is normal. They soon learn to stand up for what is right, just like their dad, Atticus.

Mason’s role within his family changed along with his ability to communicate with his younger brother, which Tex points out many times, “He’s got into the habit of bossing me around”, “ Sometimes I thought Mason hollered at me all the time to make up for Pop not hollering at all.” Contrary to Mason, who never mentions Pop, Tex misses his father, he mentions him on many occasions as a matter of fact, he talks about him at the very beginning of the novel, in the second page of the novel. Pop is the second character Tex mentions right after Negrito. His absence is felt from the very beginning. “Pop ought to be coming home pretty soon. Summer, shoot, there were lots of rodeos going on, lots of places he could be all summer, but fall would be a really good time for him to come
