“The Autobiography of Malcolm X” as told to Alex Haley was first published in 1965. The book begins in 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, where Malcolm was born. The novel follows him throughout life, from his rough up bringing in Nebraska and Michigan to his drug and crime ridden adulthood in New York and Boston. The book tells us about him working menial jobs and him participating in organized crime. However, the law finally caught up with Malcolm, culminating with his eventual imprisonment because of his criminal involvement. In prison, Malcolm heard about an organization called The Nation of Islam from his brother, Reginald. The Nation of Islam is an organization that provides spiritual, mental, and economic support to African-Americans Muslims in the United States. When Malcolm heard about the organization, he began to consider their ideology and soon he stopped smoking cigarettes and he refused to eat pork. The book was named as Time magazines 10 most important nonfiction books of the 20th century. The New York Times said of the book, “the book has changed countless lives and made Malcolm a central influence on generations of black men who admire his force, his courage, his brilliance”. In my opinion, the book was good. I would rate the book a 4/5. The style of writing was excellent, the flow of the book was smooth, the story was empowering and in general, the book did a very good job at telling the life story of one of the most powerful and inspirational African-American people in history. The book taught its readers that if you have passion, drive, and belief, you could accomplish the impossible.
