One emotion I felt during the reading of Pay it Forward was sadness and anger. I felt upset or angry when Arlene slapped Trevor across the face, I felt this way because Trevor said “Dad is not coming back”.No where in this scene did I feel it was necessary to hit Trevor. Trevor had done nothing wrong it was Arlene’s fault that she can not accept the truth and is afraid of the future. During this time in the book I could tell that Arlene was emotionally unstable due to the leaving of the father Rick. I felt upset because the mother knew that what Trevor had said was true but she did not want to face the sad truth. The reason I reacted how I did was because the fact that the mother would hit her son because she a had a tragic event and her son
I do appreciate the fact that the author points out the true feelings of the characters, even though their actions do
Joy Day Buel and Richard Buel, Jr., authors of The Way of Duty, describe Mary Fish Silliman by saying "She remained to the end of her life less a daughter of the Revolution than a child of the Puritans". This is proven throughout her life. Despite outside influences and events, Mary continued steadfast in her beliefs as a Puritan.
I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Likewise, the diverse student body is great as each student come from various backgrounds and have unique experiences all of which
The next big thing, A Break With Charity, a book about the Salem witch trials is grabbing the attention of many young minds in search of a good book. The fascinating book starts off with 16 year old Susannah English who longs to receive the answer to when her brother will return to Salem Massachusetts from a supposed fortune teller Tituba. Tituba is a slave who works for Reverend Parris. A circle of girls has already been seeing her and Susanna wants to join in. The leader of the circle Ann Putnam has started a flood of accusations about being witches towards innocent people when Susanna English really knows the truth. In order to keep Susanna “in line” and to not rat out Ann Putnam, Ann threatens to accuse Susanna’s mom of witchcraft. This
This book explores lots of different emotions, all tying into each other. Each emotions feeds off others, and different people experience different feelings. Emotion is a major part of the book because, while it doesn’t often go that deep into it, it is the driving force for lots of the plot
Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society? Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, “Community Service” written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the world through peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article, Coles states that, “students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest ways.”(Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught.
What if you were sentenced to death for a crime you did not commit? What if you were then proclaimed to be a hog by a jury of your peers? What if you had 5 months to learn to grow from the hog you are said to be, to a man so that you are able to stand tall and walk to your death on your own two legs with your head held high? What would you learn? These questions are the central conflict of the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. This book takes place on a plantation in the deeply racist state of Louisiana in the 1940s, where a black man named Jefferson is sentenced to death by means of the electric chair by an all-white jury for a murder that he did not commit. Jefferson’s white lawyer’s only defense is that Jefferson, being a

While reading this book, I had different emotions going through me. I was upset, joy, shocked but mostly angry. Why mostly angry? Anger was one of the main emotions that came to me while reading this book because how can a father sell off his daughter to a man three times age. I get that’s very common in their culture but to me that seems morally wrong. Upset was another main emotion because of the abuse she went through with her ‘husband’ as with his family. Me reading about the constant physical abuse and the rape Nujood went through had me in tears when reading. It made me think about how lucky we, children living in the United States don’t suffer the way Nujood did growing up. Lastly, the emotions of shocked and joy came together when
The moment in the book that had the biggest emotional impact on me was the end. It was at this point that Valerie's friend Jessica, took the stage and spoke of both her and nicks grievances in the shooting. The emotional was a sense of overbearing acceptance, and the feeling of a hatred now buried. Even though the blame of the children's death will always be a factor in Valerie's life, it informed others to remember that she was a hero, and she also had to struggle through the mess, her once boyfriend made. It allowed others to see that even though she was angered and did in fact put
How would it feel if this world didn’t let people have choices, didn’t let people share, or if they didn’t let people celebrate birthdays, holidays, or just celebrate anything? Well that’s what it was like for Jonas in The Giver. Jonas lives in the future in a community where The Giver is the only one who knows everything, but soon all that changed for Jonas. He became the the community 's new Receiver of Memory, and soon Jonas learns the terrible secrets of this “utopian” community. Later on as he learns some more about the community’s secrets he makes a plan to leave the community, and to take Gabe with him so he wouldn’t get released.(which means they die, but the community doesn’t understand that) In this book choices, sharing, and celebrations would have made The Giver community more positive.
There weren’t really any emotions that were evoked during or after the reading. Since this book was a non-linear, straight
