Summary Of The Film 'Remember The Titans'

The purpose of this report is to select and present a key concept from the film “Remember the Titans” and discuss its influence on team cohesion. Various scenes were critically reviewed and the psychological concept of coaching was chosen. This report will define what team cohesion is and then explain how the coaching methods of leadership style, task-related behaviour and motivational strategies either facilitate or prevent team cohesiveness. Coaching and cohesion will be examined through a sport psychology perspective and although the film will be referenced throughout the report, relevant theory, research findings and personal reflection will be provided for additional support.

However, the leadership style chosen will alter the athletes’ perceptions of the team as well as their individual satisfaction, performance and cooperation (Yarmey, 2015, p.129). In the film “Remember the Titans”, the head coach, Coach Boom, states in his first interaction, “this is no democracy, this is a dictatorship. I am the law”. According to Crocker (2015), this is classified within the autocratic style of leadership. The autocratic style of leadership is implemented when a coach engages in independent decision making and enforces personal authority (Crocker, 2015, p. 237). Using the Leadership Scale of Sports (LSS) as a measurement, the other form of coaching is the democratic style of leadership; when a coach promotes collaboration among the team and provides more positive feedback and support (Horn et al, 2011). In a study done by Horn et al (2011), researchers examined the relationship between certain athlete’s psychological characteristics and their preferences for different types of coaching behaviour. They chose motivational orientation (SMS) and competitive sport anxiety (SAS) as the psychological characteristics and asked participants to fill out a series of self-report questionnaires to assess their preferred coaching styles (LSS) (Horn et al, 2011, p. 195-199). After interpreting the data using descriptive analyse, researchers found that individuals in both groups preferred a democratic style of leadership because it resulted in more positive outcomes, such as group cohesion (Horn et al, 2011). This is consistent with other research findings who concluded that the democratic style of leadership has been shown to have a more positive impact on the development of group cohesion (Horn et al, 2011).
