Is it possible to be both savage and civilized? One can compare the image on the Smithsonian’s article, “Return of the Great American Jaguar”, with American author Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, to determine the connection between these seemingly opposite characteristics. The image depicts the combination of man and beast, which symbolizes Connell’s complex characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff, who work to display Connell's point of view that men are capable of being both civilized and savage. The short story challenges the protagonist Sanger Rainsford’s morals and beliefs when he is presented with a unique experience of being the huntee not the hunter.
