Brothers” coveys the life of two step brothers, Song Gang and Baldy Li, from their youth during the Cultural Revolution to their adulthood from the “Reform and Opening” up to present day China. The two brothers embody the attitudes and cultures of two different eras in Chinas, one of the old and one of the present. Yu Hua shows us the cruelty of China’s revolutionary past along with the injustices of today’s capitalistic China. When the novel starts out, Song and Li are children growing up right before the Cultural Revolution. During this time society is portrayed as the “old” China, one of virtue, humility, and honesty. Because of his success and image he eventually wins the heart of his brother’s wife, Lin Hong. He is the perfect representation of the new Chinese wealthy, influential, and corrupt. Of course this leads to the loss of family members, bribery, corruption, and a lack of a moral foundation. On the outside everything seems perfect, but internally Li faces all the modern trappings of capitalistic success. He had a fantastic plan of spending twenty million U.S. dollars to purchase a ride on a Russian Federation space shuttle for a tour of outer space. Perched atop his famously gold-plated toilet seat, he would close his eyes and imagine himself already floating in orbit, surrounded by the unfathomably frigid depths of space. He would look down at the glorious planet stretched out beneath him, only to choke up on realizing that he had no family left down on Earth (3). This in a way shows that materialism is becoming the core motive and benchmark of success for the Modern Era, yet materialism doesn’t necessarily breed happiness, contentment, and fulfillment at the same magnitude as the “old” era.
