Our world suffers with many issues such as racism, sexism, hate and prejudice, and society needs people that are strong enough to take a stand. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is displayed in several different forms, especially through three courageous characters. Lee introduces the concept of honorable courage through Mrs. Dubose, a woman who demonstrates that real courage comes from within. Another brave character in the novel is Tom Robinson. He shows everyone how difficult it is for a black man to be both honest and kind no matter the situation. The most courageous person would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is an important character that fits into his own definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it in numerous ways throughout the novel, as he goes against most people’s beliefs in order to do what he believes is morally right. Through these three brave characters, Lee tries to reshape people's stereotypical view of courage.
In today's society, courage is defined as the ability to succeed without changing who we are as a person or what we believe in hoot courage, justice is weak and society is corrupt. In Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird', courage is presented through the characters Atticus Finch and Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose as they confront their issues and embrace life regardless of what others think. Harper Lee constructed her narrative during a time of prejudice and injustice against Black Americans; hence courage was vital to overcome the racial discrimination many faced Both Atticus and Mrs Dubose along with the crucial events in the novel teach Jean Louise Finch, as well as the audience, the significance of courage and create an understanding that courage exists in several forms, Courage is often seen as the physical bravery an individual can display in a fearful H ever, it is also when an individual knows there is no chance of winning, but continues to fight for what they believe in. Harper Lee constructs a masculine image of this type of courage through Atticus and his handling of the mad dog incident. When comparing Atticus to the other fathers in Maycomb, Jam and Scout think of him as old and feeble' though the mad dog occurrence reveals a side of him that had not yet been discovered by his children; that he was once the best marksman the town with the name of one shot Finch'. Heck Tate insists that Atticus should kill the diseased animal even though
Atticus is a lawyer who is truly a good man and lives in the town of Maycomb Alabama during a time when people were very rude to people who they disagreed with. In to Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus embodies the theme of true courage is not absence of fear ,but the willingness to proceed in spite of it through when he does not react to Bob Ewell's threats, when Atticus faces the rabid dog, and lastly when he stands of for Tom Robinson when nobody else did.
There are many courageous people in this world including fire fighters, soldiers, police officers and other citizens that show random acts of courage. One person in particular that is a very courageous person is Atticus in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Throughout the novel Atticus shows great courage even when he knows things might not go the way he wants and he doesn’t stop or give up, he tries even harder and that shows true courage.
Some have more courage than others do. In the book To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Atticus, a father of two and lawyer, stands up for a colored man in a court of law. At first, the readers just see him as a studious, quiet father, who has unique parenting strategies, but as the book progresses, Atticus's character grows. His courage, honesty, boldness, and scruples shape his life. In the trial with Tom Robinson, this shows especially. His determination to create the best case he can even though the odds are stacked against him, show the perseverance and strength of mind he has. Throughout To Kill a Mocking Bird Atticus's character grows as a genuine, brave, godly, man.
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear” (Mark Twain), this ties in with Atticus’ and his definition because he masters fear and is resistant to it; he takes the case and is not feared by Bob’s presence. One of the many topics in this book is courage; it is used many times in the novel and in life. It is explained many times in this novel; whether it is through Harper Lee’s use of courage, how courage is defined and the character who exemplifies courage the best. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird courage is expressed by many characters in many different examples.
Courage is usually shown as having great strength and bravado. However, there is another kind of courage, the quiet, humble type, in which an individual stands for his beliefs and principles. To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, is filled with many themes and lessons, but the overriding theme is courage. In To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty and intimidation, to stand for what is right. Many of the book’s characters depict this virtue, but none more than Atticus Finch does. He shows courage as a parent, lawyer and member of his community. Atticus believes that courage, like charity, starts at home.
Not only does Atticus teach the children a collection of lessons that pertain to everyday life, but he instills Jem and Scout with his compassionate nature and immense amount of integrity.
One thing Atticus always stood up for was to never fight, to be humble and remain respectful no matter what happens.Scout is being called named because of her father defending Tom so Scout doesn't like it and wants to fight everyone that calls her names. On page 76, Atticus said “You just hold your head high and keep those fist down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat.Try fighting with your head for a change.”This quote explains how Atticus wanted them to use their heads and challenge the world and their peers instead of fighting them. That is one lesson that every child should learn. Atticus would also teach them to never judge a person because of the stereotypes that people are held up to. On page 30 Atticus says “You never understand a person until you consider things from their point of view- until you climb into their skin and walk around in it.” These lessons that Atticus taught his kids helped them understand the world and the process they were about to get themselves
In ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Atticus Finch is portrayed as courageous, due to his wiliness to do the right thing despite his awareness of the ridicule he will face. Throughout the novel the author develops the image of Atticus’s
*Courage, it is when you push yourself to do the thing that you are most afraid to do. It is when you continue on despite what troubles or difficulties you face throughout your way and endure the uncertainties that come along. And according to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, courage is not a man with a gun. Courage is “when you know you’re licked before you began but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 149). *Atticus Finch is a courageous man and he proves how courage is an important part in living our lives and moving forward. Atticus is a great example of what courage really is and he demonstrates that throughout many different events in the novel. Atticus demostrates true courage through events like protecting Tom Robinson from the angry mob, shooting the mad dog, raising his 2 kids Scout and Jem by himself, and when he defends Tom Robinson in trial.
“I want you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (ch.11), Atticus Finch expresses what he believes is real courage through exploring a variety of significant categories, as it is one of the most important notions of To Kill a Mockingbird. These are intertwined with seemingly unrelated notions such as injustice and growing up, which are all recurring themes in Lee’s novel. As the reader is exposed to the complexities of the plot, Lee conveys that there are instances
There are many moments that he said things to Scout and Jem that taught them how to be better people. He taught them how to be a Mockingbird. He also treated Scout and Jem with dignity. “I never herd Atticus raise his voice in my life, except for a deaf witness” (lee 167). But he shows that he also knows how to be strict when his children act up, or to tell them when they messed up “Jem, Scout, said Atticus I don’t want to hear of any strip poker again, go to Jems house and get your pants” (lee 70).
When the kids get an air rifle for Christmas Atticus won’t tell them how to shoot it, for they should learn on their own, but he doesn’t give them one rule to follow and that is never to kill a mockingbird. That was the first time Scout heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something. So Scout went over and asked Miss Maudie about it. In response she says, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. they don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” In one part of the book the author put in about Mr. Underwood writing about the death of Tom Robinson, but in it he adds that it is a sin to kill a cripple. I think in the book Tom had such a big part in it because Tom and the mockingbird are in a way alike.
