The idea of heroism is a common motif in Noir literature; one that dominates the characterization of the traditional hard-boiled detective. This remains constant in Raymond Chandler’s novel, The Big Sleep, in which Philip Marlowe is hired to investigate the blackmail of a rich man with two troublesome, fun-loving daughters. As Marlowe gains more information throughout the course of his investigation, he becomes closer with the daughters, Vivian and Carmen Sternwood, and learns many dirty secrets about the family and people close to them. This becomes as much of an exploration of the exploitation of General Sternwood, as much as it is an exploration of Marlowe himself and his role in life. Throughout the course of the novel, Marlowe’s attempts

“The bad sleep well.” This quote is actually the name of a 1960’s Japanese film directed by the world renowned director Akira Kurosawa. There isn’t much to say about the movie, but it has a key role in the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama play Doubt: A Parable. Out of all of the places that the author John Patrick Shanley puts this quote is right at the first page before chapter one and after the preface with two other quotes. The location of the quote and what the quotes say give the reader questions and what happened and maybe foreshadowing what will come in the book.
Darkness surrounds the evening sky. The stars were peeking out from their dark home. It looked as if God took a straight pin, poked a sheet of paper with tiny holes. Crickets softly played their symphony as the world slept. James laid in his bunk, staring off into the darkness. He wondered what the day had in store for him. The night watchman quietly walked his route, like a thief in the night.
There are a few factors that are essential for life such as breathing or eating, but one of the most essential factor is sleep. Even though the amount of sleep people need differs from one individual to another, the fact is that eventually everyone needs to sleep. People know the importance of sleep, but due to the increased workload and the pressure of society people are getting less sleep. As a result, there has been an increase interest on the effects lack of sleep has on the mind especially the memory of a person. Many questions arose about the relationship between sleep and memory due to the fact most high school and college students have become sleep deprived. For example, does more sleep mean higher grades?

Faith. Listed as a strong belief in God. A majority of believers in religions start with a strong faith in God when their lives are normal and nothing bad is going on. Most people start with hope and innocence that they are optimistic about the religion in which the believer has just joined. Before reading Sharma’s short story, “Surrounded by Sleep”, coming from a practicing religious family I have learned that people expect things from God just because here that God brings on good things to other people that they should receive good things too, they monger for good things to happen to them. People expect that God will give them a good life if they practice their faith well enough. After reading the short story it was easy to see that the same thing happened to the characters.
