The main argument made by Ingersoll and May is that the reason for the perceived teacher shortage is not about the colleges and universities not being able to recruit minority students or minority students not being able to pass the assessments to get accepted into the education programs, but that once minorities are in the classroom they leave because of the poor working conditions. The point of this article was to highlight why minority teachers leave the teaching profession after three years or less. This article was a bit more refreshing in that it looked at minority educators in the classroom and what schools are doing or not doing to attract and/or retain them. There were a few cost effective ideas like faculty decision-making influence
Across the United States, schools are facing a major teacher shortage as they try to fill positions in science, math, special education, bilingual education, and other fields. The shortage mainly lies in the schools serving low-income or colored students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the student population will increase by about three million in the next decade. While the number of students is multiplying, teacher enrollment in preparation programs is down remarkably, falling 35 percent nationwide in the last five years (Long 2). Not only are more people not entering the teaching profession, multiple teachers are reaching retirement age. Because of the shortage, several states have been loosening their certifications
In this world you will face a significant number of challenges. Without a doubt my biggest challenge is being Mexican and coming from Immigrant parents. Although I really embrace this that makes me unique it does come with lots of disadvantages. I believe that this is one of the hardest challenges that I will go through in my life, but certainly I will try my best to overcome the disadvantages that come with it. As of my current life I believe that being a minority in the education system, the communities we live in get less funding from the government. I can’t say that we don’t get a good education, but it can always be better and match other districts. I have personally witnessed schools with better resources and facilities. This in hand
In the United States, each and every day, more minority children are born than white children. Fewer and fewer white parents are giving birth to multiple children, while many minority parents from African-American cultures to Hispanic cultures are continuing to have the same number of children, and possibly more. With all these minority children entering the U.S. education system, there is a problem current minority students are facing; there is a shortage of minority teachers. While there are minority teachers in the workforce, when Richard Ingersoll and Henry May, in their report: "The Minority Teacher Shortage: Fact or Fable?", looked at the data in 2011, they found that there is not a shortage in terms of number of teachers, but a shortage of minority teachers in the places that need them most: inner-city schools, with high minority populations. Minority students assimilate better with a teacher of the same ethnic background and the contrary view of this was highlighted in a 2012 skit by Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. The duo did a skit of an inner-city black substitute teacher inside of a middle class, almost all white classroom. Using his current cultural capital (defined as: “…the general cultural background, knowledge, disposition, and skills that are passed on from one generation to another,” (McLaren, 80,) the teacher, Mr. Garvey, acts as a disciplinarian. He takes attendance and when a student corrects his inner-city pronunciation (i.e. says “Jay-quellin”
An educator who understands issues of diversity and difference will make the classroom a more enriching environment for all of the students in it, and will ensure those students who are adversely affected by such diversity and difference are given the opportunity and encouragement to overcome challenges they face. Socio-economic disadvantage among students has an impact in the classroom in terms of the ability of a child to gain an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to be a successful student. Gender issues can be one of those concerns in a classroom that, unless they are quite obvious, can be almost disregarded because they are not acknowledged as a concern, for example, asking boys to move chairs. Stereotypical roles can be ingrained in an educators psyche. Cultural diversity is becoming more prevalent in our classrooms; it is the educator’s responsibility to ensure the classroom is a welcoming and diverse environment. When considering how to approach these issues in a classroom and incorporating support for students, an educator would benefit from consulting the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) or the Australian Curriculum (AC). These documents provides frameworks for working with diversity and ensuring students succeed within their given circumstances with the support of both their educator and their school. It is imperative educators understand the effects of socio-economic disadvantage, gender issues and cultural diversity when creating an
Poverty is a serious issue which our society and children faces every day. It is a constant struggle that shouldn’t be ignored. UNICEF states “The study of OECD countries in 2007, over fourteen percent of Australian children under the age of eighteen are currently living in households who are defined as poor or with incomes less than half of the median national income”. The increase in the number and percentage of children living in poverty within our society has contributed to making today's classrooms more diverse than ever it has been. This highlights and makes both teaching and learning more challenging. Diversity exists in the students who are living in poverty and the education assistant and teachers must provide the concept of diversity
To understand the lack of African American teachers, an exploration of Black teacher’s reasoning and experience when going into teaching can be beneficial. A study conducted by Farinde, LeBlanc, and Otten (2015) sought to understand what contributes and hinders Black females from pursuing a career in education. They found an assortment of factors positive and negative that lead to their decision to becoming a teacher. However one of the most hindering factors contributing to a lack of diversity came at an institutional level. From a policy standpoint, more institutional support within teacher education programs is needed in order to increase the pool of Black female teachers, lack of institutional support…obstructs the pipeline from teacher education program to K-12 classroom, with little or no support in higher education, the number of Black female teachers will either remain constant or will gradually decline (Farinde, LeBlanc, & Otten,
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
America has encountered a change within the teaching profession: concerning, experience, age, credentials, and ethnic background (Feistritzer, 2011). It is almost as if the year of 2005, overturned the trend of older employed teachers (Feistritzer, 2011). A six-year survey shows that the amount of teachers under the age of thirty has increased drastically, and that most teachers have earned master degrees. Also, although teaching has been a predominately white profession, more Hispanic and African American teachers were hired between the years of 2005 and 2011 (Feistritzer, 2011).
California is facing not only teacher shortage but teachers that are diverse. While the Hispanic and Asian population are increasing, there are hardly any teachers that are diverse. According to American Association of College for Teacher Education “that students of color made up more than 45% of the PK–12 population, whereas teachers of color made up only 17.5% of the educator workforce." (Deruy). While many may argue that the lack of diversity is happening because majority of the diverse population is going towards jobs that pay more such into technology and other occupations, one has to look also on how schools are encouraging those students into the teaching profession. Old schools like Mesa Verde High School that have been providing
Due to the mismatch of race from teachers to students in schools, the minority students have a harder time receiving a higher education.“When minority students see someone at the blackboard that looks like you, it helps you reconceive what’s possible for you,” said Thomas S. Dee, a professor of education at Stanford University. By having a teacher with the same race as the student, creates a bond in knowledge of the barriers that minorities have to jump through. It also lets students see that even though they might be in a tough situation, they are able to receive a high level of education and may be able to reach their dreams. In an article in the Nea Today titled When Implicit Bias Shapes Teacher Expectations, they explain that the opinion
United States is a very diverse country, which means that our classroom will full of students from different ethnicity, race, religion, etc. This diversity affects teachers in their classrooms because they need to learn the students cultural background to use this to motivated his/her students to learn, in this case to motivate students to
I agree that many minority groups are discriminated in education. Not only Hispanics who want to go to law school are discriminated. There are also many African Americans and young women’s who have been discriminated in other education paths. A family friend who came from El Salvador had big goals for the future; he wanted to be a psychologist. That family friend was outstanding student in high school with a GPA of 4.6. That friend name Tony, had a friend who also wanted to be a psychologist but Tony was a better student than his friend was. When time came for college application, Tony and his friend both apply for NC State, UNC and ECU. Not surprisingly Tony’s white friend got accepted to all 3 colleges but Tony only got accepted to ECU.
An example of this educational gap was in the New York schooling system. Where blacks and Hispanics “make up about 71 percent of public and charter school students citywide, they received just 12 percent of specialized high school students in 2003 ( Leonie, Ravitch 2). One of the causes this of disparity is the difference in schools. According pew research there is a difference between schools in the suburban which are made up of mostly white children and inner city schools made up of mostly minorities like Hispanics and African Americans. The suburban schools which according to pew research center is mostly white and the inner city schools which are mostly made up of the other minorities (Citation 3). Staring with the quality of teachers, according to Pitre “unqualified teachers are disproportionately assigned to teach low-income ethnic minority children” (Pitre 5). An example of this difference is in the state of California where it was found that in the most segregated schools there “were more than five times as likely to have an uncertified teacher” (Pitre 5).The importance of teachers in the schools, especially teachers who teach young children is invaluable. According to Cowan Pitre “the issue of access to a high quality teacher is important because research has consistently identified teacher quality as the most important school-based factor in student achievement” ( 5). When low quality teachers are assigned to minorities how
Within the core of many educational institutions, diversity is a commercial tacit. While every institution cannot offer the same kind of diversity, the endorsement of such exists through various definitions. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges define diversity through the various classes: race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, disability, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and age (“Statement on Diversity”)
As of July 1, 2011, there are 36, 708, 083 people in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2017a). 1.2% higher than the population last year, which was 36, 264, 604 people of all ages and both sexes (Statistics Canada, 2017b). The growth of population in Canada, which in this case powered largely by immigration, increases not only the human capital, but the diversity in every province as well. Hence, as diversity expands, there is also a rampant growth in religion. In 2011, there are 108 religions observed in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2011) - Christianity, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu – to name a few. These demographics have connotations on how diversity in school is also evident.
