The article “Whispers From The Grave” by Katia Bachko, it talks about ghost whisperers or people who talk to ghosts, it also talks about why people are so interested in ghost stories. One example to show that people are interested in ghost stories is they are spooky. The article states “Sarah Winchester starred in terror at Adam Coons, trying to comprehend the chilling words he had just uttered” (Bachko 4). Sarah was the wife to the man who owns the company of the Winchester rifle, this shows how the ghost story is spooky because, it makes the reader spooked of what could come next. If someone didn’t know what going to happen next they would wonder and question what would happen and generally people like stories when they have to guess what

The novel, The Dead and the Gone, by Susan Beth Pfeffer, is about a 17 year old boy having to be responsible for his two siblings, 12 and 14, in New York, after a natural disaster that affected many places throughout the world. In this science fiction novel, the Earth’s moon is knocked off of its orbit, and closer to the Earth, after being hit by an asteroid. This was followed by tsunamis, earthquakes, and many other natural disasters, that made food supply and comfortable shelter/ homes low, expensive, and hard to find or get, because of the gravitational pull of the moon becoming much stronger. On the first day of this catastrophe, the main characters’, Alex, Bri, and Julie, mother, Mami, was called in from the hospital, and the three never received word from her after that day. As for their father, Papi, he had gone to Puerto Rico for his mother’s funeral.
The book Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card opens on the planet of Lusitania, where three xenobiologists – Pipo, Pipo's son Libo, and Libo's friend Novinha - are studying and communicating with a sentient species known as the Pequeninos (Piggies). A human colony used to exist on the planet but was wiped out by a virus called the Descolada, and Novinha discovers that this virus is present in every life form on the planet. Pipo finds out and leaves to ask the Piggies about the virus, but is later discovered dead. The Piggies claim to have been trying to help him, but it is still considered an act of hostility as the Piggies did not plant a tree in his corpse as they usually do for deaths among themselves. Novinho falls in love with Libo but will not marry him, as marrying him would mean he would have access to her files and she fears that this would cause him to question and die just as Pipo did. She calls for a Speaker for the Dead – a priest-like figure that traverses great galactic distances – to come speak for Pipo.
‘The Grave’ by Katherine Anne Porter is a story that illustrates the initiation of a child from innocence to experience. The underlying theme behind the central idea of innocence to experience is the cycle of life and death and rebirth. This theme is illustrated in the young protagonist, Miranda, and her epiphany on the concept of the cycle of life and rebirth. The dominant tone in ‘The Grave’ is melancholic, and that tone is created through the language elements of symbolism, diction, and imagery. The story’s tone is also supported by the fiction element character.
Medieval China, as seen in the Stories from a Ming Collection, was characterized by distinct separations between men and women’s abilities, typical old fashioned family structure, and a desire to advance their social status. Throughout all the stories in this book, it dives deep into different aspects of how men and women are treated, how families were structured and how that affects their lives, as well as the values these people held. A very common trend in the stories was how different men and women were treated and the limitations they may or may not had.
In his novel, Native Speaker, Chang-Rae Lee portrays the struggles of Korean-American spy, Henry Park. Many conflicts arise throughout the story such as Henry’s relationships with Lelia and his father. Death is a reality involved in each of these conflicts. Mitt’s death is at the core of Henry’s demising relationship with Lelia, and the death of Henry’s mother leads to a greater gap between Henry and his father. A common motif that Lee uses is the silence of the characters most affected by the death. In each case, the characters refuse to confront their loss and attempt to move on with life as if nothing happened. Since each instance causes conflict, Lee comments on the dangers of cultural difference regarding the handling of death. Lee illustrates that it is necessary to cross the border of understanding how cultures handle certain situations differently. Since the characters in Native Speaker do not cross this border, conflict ensues. Ultimately, Lee uses the motif of silence after death as a symbol for cultural differences creating tension.
In America, there is a judicial system that helps justice prevail, to punish criminals, and let the innocent walk. The judicial system allows for there to be a trial where evidence is presented. Through the evidence presented, the jury then decides if the person on trial is innocent or guilty. Never in any trial, in any courthouse, under any judge would it be allowed for a murder to be justified so that one could restore a relative’s honor. However, this is not true in the location of Chronicle of a Death Foretold, as the Vicario twins were found innocent due to “legitimate case of honor, which was by the court upheld in good faith” (Marquez 48). The reason that this honor is upheld is
Horror Writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, tells stories because it’s a great want to express social and personal anxieties over sex, drugs, parents, kids, bullies and war. At times we want to talk about these kinds of things because we want to have a better understanding of them. But we can’t always find the right time or place. It’s also an eye opener, making perceptions of reality more clearer and or more opening. Taking in that life is calm and
The concept and belief of honor in the Columbian culture in Chronicle of a Death Foretold is one of the deciding aspects of the character's actions, motives, and beliefs. Nobody questions the actions taken to preserve ones honor because it is such an important moral trait that one must cherish. In this society a man or woman without honor is an outcast to the community and to the culture. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold two twin brothers are burdened with defending this tradition of honor. The brothers find out that their sister has lost her virginity before marriage and she claims that Santiago Nasar is to blame. To regain the honor of their sister, and their family the brothers believe it is their duty to kill Santiago Nasar. Could such
I am covering passage 36 – 37 where Kate mentions the past when her brother George was still alive and the effects it had when he passed. In this passage, the author Kate Mildenhall creates a tone of grief and reflection by using the literary techniques of emotive language and repetition whilst also using the dialog to keep characters vague and emotionless. This positions the audience to sympathize with Kate through her grief and sorrow due to her lack of understanding and openness at the time. The passage is written with the intent of showing that it is a past memory, using tenses such as ‘I remember when’ and ‘used to’.
In the novel The Dead, Gabriel Conroy, who is the nephew of Julia and Kate Morkan, is the main character of the story. One night he and his wife attended a party, which was given by his two aunts, and there were many other members in the party. The story revolves around their life and memories.Gabriel Conroy felt a blur between his soul and the dead. Some people died, but they are still alive because they have true love. Some people are alive, but they are still dead because they never love.I like the story for three reasons.
The power of the story has been very much a part of the lives of humans throughout time. The story is able to bring the past to the present and the dead to the living. The story can make the blind see. The story is able to make others feel for events in time that they have never experienced. The story has a profound effect on both the teller and the audience. As the audience is thought to be the beneficiary or the storytelling process, the teller is able to relive the times of old, or even teach a valuable lesson to his or her audience. Thus, allowing both parties to gain something intangible throughout this process. In “The Lives of the Dead,” O’Brien conveys the importance of storytelling and imagination by suggesting that the dead can be brought back to life in the minds of the people who hear it.
Spooky or creepy stories have been told for ages. Lots of people like hearing scary tales but I think what makes a story really scary is one which is real. A horror story which really happened can be scarier than a made up story. There is a house in Los Angeles, California which sits on top of a Los Feliz hilltop. It has become known as the Los Feliz Murder Mansion. It was a fateful night when on December 6, 1959 Dr. Harold Perelson took a hammer and struck his wife dead, he then severely beat his 18 year old daughter and finally ended his own life by having a acid cocktail. The mansion remained alone and uninhabited, holding its dark secrets for the next fifty years.
