Summary Of Why Look At Animals By Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan argues the traditional approaches to animal rights and welfare, as well as the environment that the animals live in, are unacceptable. He addresses the issues and gives his own feedback and opinions about the topic and what he thinks the overall outcome should be. A large portion of the article is spent with ideas running through Pollan's mind and he is trying to gather enough information to realize if the process is correct or not. First, Pollan explains what's wrong with industrial farming. Pollan states that beef cattle are used to standing ankle deep in their own waste, as well as eating corn which they can't digest. Pigs become depressed and stop caring to the point that they allow their tails to be chewed off. Which results in factories "tail docking" to take the tail completely off and leave only a small amount, so now the tail is even more sensitive. On a factory farm all of the animals natural instincts are taken away. Pollan is saying that the current conditions which the animals live in are inhumane and filthy. Another problem that Pollan sees with the current conditions of animals are that people along with farmers are not connected with the animals. John Berger wrote an essay titled "Why Look at Animals?" in which he stated "and specifically the loss of eye contact has left us deeply confused about the terms of our relationship to other species." (Pollan 400). While looking in an animal's eyes, you can see pain, fear, and tenderness. People have built a relationship where they feel like they can both honor meat and eat animals without looking away. Now it seems like we can look away or we can become vegetarians.
