Sanford, J., et al. (2011). A Process of Decision Making by Caregivers of Family Members With Heart Failure. Research and Theory for Nursing Practice: AN International Journal. 25 (1): 55-70. The authors of the above study used a grounded qualitative design to select 20 participants from cardiology offices, inpatient hospital units and/or adult day care facilities over a 12-months period during 2008-9. The data was collected based on interviews, and demographic and psychographic data was also collected. Interviews were open-ended and private. Because the data was qualitative, data was transcribed verbatim, checked for accuracy and coded. A triangulation method was used to establish validity based on comparison with data and conclusions to establish accuracy. The specific demographic and psychographic information used included gender, marital status, ethnicity, employment status, income range, living arrangements, and relationship to the patient with heart failure. Variables included: questions about illness of family member, decisions made based on the illness, ways other families interacted, how decisions were made and might be made, advice and philosophical overtones, influences. Data was first transcribed, and then theoretical developments were completed and developed.
