Evaluation is one of the tools in assessing the impact of knowledge, skills and attitudes gained by the learners. Summative assessment is an effective measurement tool used to gauge the learners' level of success or proficiency that has been obtained at the end of an instructional unit, by comparing against some standards or benchmark.
Summative assessment serves as a clear checkpoint for teachers to re-assess themselves, their methodologies used and the level of proficiency of their learners and come up with future recommendations on how to improve better their ways and means in attaining their ultimate goal of changing the perceptions of their learners into more realistic and practical world.
The following are criteria in achieving a high quality classroom assessment which summative assessment is one of the tools:
There should always be clear and appropriate learning targets for the specific subject and evaluation needs.
Proper matching of method of assessment with the targets like what specific type of test is to be administered in evaluating the cognitive domain of the learner.
Valid and reliable assessment methodologies which are within the context of educational policies, if applicable.
It should be fair and unbiased for all type of learners vis-Ã -vis the aim of the assessment.
The assessment should also be practical and efficient which will be determined on how students understood clearly the goal of the assessment and how are these helpful in their lives
