What truly is the “American Dream”? Furthermore, during the Great Depression, even the concept of the “American Dream” was not readily available and was no more than a fallacy at the time. For the 2 protagonists in Of Mice And Men, their dream, like many others, was to “live off the fatta the land” and become independent. However, this was not such an easy task at the time, not just because of the rough economic times, but because people of that era still had World War 2 still very fresh in their minds, with the harbored hatred and untrust that came along with it. Nevertheless, for the millions who died in the course of the war, this “American Dream” was not only something worth living for it was something dying for too. However, in the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the author emphasizes that the dreams and hopes were delusions and has a grim outlook on living life in search of a dream.

Many characters in, “Of Mice and Men”, show friendship. George and Lennie show the most examples of having a great friendship. George and Lennie both take each care of one another and care about each other. They both support each other in making the dream of living off the fatta’ the land, come true. Doing these things prove that they have a strong friendship.

In the book of mice and men George and Lennie are good friends. They want to get a farm and get rabbits and live off the fat of the land. George and Lennie show the true meaning of friendship.

As Thomas Aquinas states, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship.” Friends cheer each other up when they are sad and support them when they are happy. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers, George and Lennie, arrive as newcomers on the ranch. Throughout the story, different problems are thrown their way, and their friendship is tested with each one. George shows how true friendship requires sacrifice because friends sacrifice personal freedom, they protect each other, and they sacrifice emotional energy.

A friend is someone you can count on to be by your side no matter what happens. They are a big part of your lives, and even though there are fights and disagreements, they still care for you. A good friends is almost another sibling. In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have a relationship that is very similar to that of siblings. They are not always on good terms but are always there for each other. They have a unique friendship that many men didn't have in the time of the Great Depression. While Lennie was dependent on George, he was also a source of comfort and a friend to George. Sadly, George had no choice but to kill Lennie ending their friendship and their dream together. Though it may seem cruel, George's actions were out of love. In John Steinbeck's novel we read about a complicated but beautiful friendship between George and Lennie and see it come to a tragic end.

In the article “Friendship in the Age of Economics” professor Todd May implies there are three types of friendships. Those of pleasure, those of usefulness, and true friendship. George and Lennie have a true friendship. George tries to protect Lennie as much as he can till the ending where he is forced to kill his best friend. George and Lennie are vulnerable to each other because George tries to help Lennie all he can.

So sometimes friendships aren't always great, but friends can help get you through hard times but can have hard choices to make. In the mice and men, many characters have friends. to help them through hard times. But there are tough choices. Lennie and George are a great example as in the story George has to kill his life long friend Lennie.

Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.

The novella focuses on two farm workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, who struggle to keep their jobs and eventually move to a new ranch. With the dream of owning their own land one day, they plan on working there for a few months in hopes of Lennie not getting into trouble again. Lennie does not know his own strength and often gets himself into difficult situations without completely understanding what he did wrong. It is undoubtedly the reason George ends up fatally shooting Lennie in the end before Curley does. He states on how they are different, their problems and what keeps their relationship stable. Friendships may be difficult and put you out from the rest, but it has it’s values.
