Client Perceptions of Therapy Component Helpfulness in Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorders.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the helpfulness of group cognitive-behavioral therapy in patients with anxiety disorders. The treatment required participants to be highly motivated and willing to endure unpleasant emotional states. The treatment encouraged participants to challenge long standing maladaptive beliefs. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of virtual reality exposure therapy to the cognitive-behavioral approach to treating anxiety disorders. PsycINFO, PubMed, ISI Web of Science and Academic Search Premier were used to gather date. Dependent variables included primary outcomes, and real-life impact outcomes. They calculated Cohen’s d effect size using the means and SDs that were available. They found out that in the case of anxiety disorders, VRET did far better than the waitlist control. VRET also had a similar impact as the classical evidence-based treatment. Reducing anxiety sensitivity with exercise.
This study was conducted to extend the findings in using exercise to reduce anxiety sensitivity as well as depressed mood in persons with anxiety disorders. The study participants were made up of psychology students at the Methodist University in Dallas as well as a community sample in Boston. A 16 item questionnaire was given to participants and questions were scaled on a 5 point Likert type scale. The Beck Anxiety Inventory was used to measure the severity of anxiety symptoms and the Beck Depression Inventory was used to measure the symptoms of depression. Exercise was completed on a treadmill that was programed with a specific training program. They found that 20 min of exercise at 70% of heart rate yielded a large reduction in anxiety sensitivity as well as depression symptoms.
