An individual and the community they live in are both factors that impact individual's education. Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie is an essay published in the Los Angeles Times that describes the impact that reading had on his life and it shows that individuality triumphs community towards the goal to an education. He Named Me Malala is a movie dedicated to Malala Yousafzai's pursuit towards an education and it displays that an individual is responsible for their quest for an education. Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol is a book that discusses the disparities in education between schools of different classes and races, the book showcases that individuals are solely responsible for their pursuit in an education. Sherman Alexie's essay discusses the impact that reading has had on his life and how his Native American race has discouraged him from pursuing an education. Alexie states, "We were Indian children expected to be stupid. Most live up to those expectations inside the classroom but subverted them on the outside," (Alexie 111). Alexie expresses the idea that his race was expected to act a certain way. Indian children were expected to be unintelligent and not pursue an education. Since Indian children were pressured by the community to act a certain way, they conformed to the confinements and regulations of society. This shows that Indians gave in to what people expected them to be and that there was a fear of education to the Native Americans. The fear of education was due to the fact that if Indian children learned and processed certain information, they might act differently than expected or deemed right. As a child, Alexie was constantly looked down upon due to his intelligence. His intelligence garnered much attention towards him and he was known as an oddity. His curiosity of education led him towards the pursuit of education despite what people said or thought of him. Louis, Detroit, New York, and Texas. They display the wretched realization of just how different school can be for poor and minority children as opposed to middle-class and white children. The book states, "Someone else can't want a good life for you. You have got to want it for yourself," (Kozol 86). This statement expresses the idea that no one can guide an individual to a secure life, but that only the individual themselves can achieve that goal. It may be true that the individual's environment can influence the individual towards an education, but only the individual can begin their quest towards an education if it is wanted. No one will baby an individual and help them through the process because the individual will be responsible for wanting and maintaining an education. The book states, "Most of the students in this school won't go to college. Many of them will join the military. If there's a war, we have to fight. Why should I go to war and fight for opportunities I can't enjoy-for things rich people value, for their freedom, but I do not have that freedom and I can't go to their schools?" (Kozol 104). Many students will not go to school, but instead join the military in order to fight for their country.
