Supernatural Forces In Beowulf

Supernatural forces play a dominant role in most epic poems like Beowulf. In this famous Old English literature, the supernatural forces appear mostly as horrible monsters for Beowulf to prove his strength and overcome. One of the three behemoths that Beowulf must fight is Grendel. At line 104 we learn that Grendel is “a mighty stalker of the marches, who held the moors and fens; this miserable man lived for a time in the land of giants, after the Creator had condemned him among Cain’s race—when he killed Abel.” This description shows how Beowulf is a god-like king due to the fact that he is able to defeat a monster not only cursed by God but has lived since the days of Cain and Abel.
