The supervisor will inform the supervisee of the evaluation instrument used to assess his/her progress. Verbal and/or written feedback will be provided during each supervisory session. To be in good standing, supervisee must perform to a certain professional standard. If the supervisor becomes aware of personal or professional limitations that may impede future professional performance the supervisor and supervisee will discuss concerns and work towards resolving issues. In the event differences cannot be resolved and/or expectations, goals, and roles are not met the supervisor will discuss termination of the supervisory relationship and will help the supervisee identify areas for continued growth and development (Corey et al. 2010). In the video, “Are You Liable If You Have No Duty to Warn?” a risk management consultant discusses duty to warn, rules and exceptions to confidentiality, and privilege in the therapist-client relationship. One case is discussed in this particular video regarding an incident that occurred in Utah where a therapist requested police assistance for transporting a suicidal client to a secure psychiatric unit. The therapist knew that the client had a history of threatening and violent behavior. Sometimes, the patient would wave a gun in the air threatening danger toward his family and himself.
All participants alluded to the importance of supervision as a positive impact of the work, as it allowed them the opportunity of talking about how the work was impacting on them. Participant 2 made an interesting comment on how, although there was a lot of supervision, which was important, it was all contained in the ‘narrow, confined building’ where he saw offenders and so what he found helpful was retaining his external supervisor which allowed him the opportunity, “to talk about what happens inside this building, outside of the building and get a different perspective”.
