Executive Summary Creating and maintaining a successful supply chain within a business can prove to be one of the largest challenges in developing a successful foundation. “HP is implementing a plan to fundamentally transform the company. HP believes that the exploration of alternatives for PSG (Personal Systems Group) will help the company accomplish its strategic goals and pursue profitable growth and enhanced shareholder value (Thacker, 2011).” By gaining these values the company will maximize its potentials in new endeavors and begin to reorganize the information into a well designed system involving the flow of goods and services. HP has never been afraid of reinvention and has always focused on new adventures from efficiency with system development and exploration in the global market. HP shows very little weakness but needs to stay focused on continuously developing insightful plans to stay ahead of the demand and competition. One issue involved with HP’s systems, is better explained by Mr. Johnson as “the goal is ‘increased integration’ of now-disparate advertising, and ‘we may conclude that there are some improvements we can make’ in the way Hewlett-Packard manages agencies and advertising. Some Hewlett-Packard executives--and some of the company 's agency executives--earlier have said they believe the marketer should consolidate to eliminate confusion (Johnson, 1999).” If not fully understood and redeveloped, this advertisement system can become extremely detrimental to the entire flow of the company. Success for many organizations depends on the firm’s ability to balance product and process changes while exceeding customer expectations for improved cost delivery and quality. In lieu of these issues firms have started to implement principles of supply chain management. Supply chain management mainly involves managing the flow of incoming materials, manufacturing operations, and downstream distribution has to be in alignment that is responsive to change in customer demands eliminating a surplus of inventory.

A supply chain is very important to an organization. It can and should show the relationship between suppliers, distributors, managers and consumers. This paper would detail how important suppliers and distributions are to an organization’s success. And how important a supply chain is within an organization and how managers can utilize the supply chain. It is important that companies such as Target Corporations utilize the supply chain and gain competitive advantages. Target is one of the world’s largest retail stores; the first Target was opened in 1962 in Roseville, Minnesota (Target.com). By the end of 1962 there were only four Target and they were all operated in Minnesota.

HP is the world’s largest technology company. Their area of expertise and services range from printing, personal computer manufacturing, and software packages to IT infrastructure and services in cloud computing and connectivity.
A third challenge facing Mr. Heal and Mr. Thomas is the issue of a sales force that is properly setup to accommodate the strategic alliance. On page six of the case, we learn that the HP-Microsoft and IBM-Cisco alliances both utilized dedicated sales staff. We also learn that in Europe, “HP used a specialized, dedicated sales force for selling HP services bundled with Cisco products.” (Page 6) In fact, Elias Stephan, who was then HP services group’s global alliance director, noted that “In Europe, the relationship with the field is much better.” (Page 6) If both HP and Cisco were used to utilizing dedicated sales staff with strategic alliances, what incentive was there for both firms to break the trend when dealing with an HP-Cisco alliance?
