Supporting School Uniforms Essay

Bullying is a problem that affects every student in America and recently this problem has increased among American students. According to the National Education Association (2016), an "estimated 160,000 students missed school every day due to a fear of violence and harassment from their peers." Students at many schools, including my own, have become more divided. This division has resulted in bullying especially towards students that stand out from the crowd with the way they look and dress. Along with continuing the anti-bullying programs already in place, public schools should implement a school uniform in order to reduce divisions among students, which should, in turn, reduce bullying and violence among students.

Having school uniforms or "dress codes", has both positives and negatives. Some people would like to believe that they help and play a role in students academic performance and behavior at school. However, others counter that, with it does not help, it only creates a bigger problem by enforcing the rules of a school dress code. According to "School Uniforms: An Overview", the definition of dress code means, "rules designed by school districts or individual schools to prescribe students ' attire" (Chittom). Just imagine an intruder is in your school and the police are trying to find him but he’s blended in with the crowd. Now imagine a intruder in your school and everybody is wearing a school uniform except for the intruder. This will allow police to effortlessly pick him out of the crowd and capture him. Unfortunately, all across the world, this fantasy is a reality. For years, there has been a huge controversy going on about school uniforms and how they affect students performances socially and academically. The opposition states that school uniforms are costly and takes away the freedom to express oneself as an individual, yet school uniforms insure student safety and help students stay focussed during school. Although some opponents express the idea that school uniforms are costly and take away the students freedom to express themselves, they fail to recognize that school uniforms insure the safety of students, helps them stay focussed and are cost effective.
