Survival In Hatchet

Have you ever survived on your own before? If not, would you be able too? All alone in the wilderness? Throughout the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, the main character Brian survived a gruesome plane crash, and finds himself in the Canadian Wilderness, surviving on his own for 54 days. One of the main reasons why Brian was able to survive was because of fire. However, Brian went through many awareness moments to help him continue the survival in the wilderness.

Chapters 12–17 describe the days that Louie spent adrift, trying to survive in the vast Pacific Ocean. When his B-24 bomber crashed into the sea on May 27, 1943, only three men survived: Louie, his pilot Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips, and tail gunner Francis “Mac” McNamara. Over the next 46 days, they struggled to survive in two small, inflatable rafts while drifting across miles and miles of water.

Brian Robeson a 13-year-old boy from New York is the main character of Hatchet by Gary Paulson. The reason Brian is making this plane trip to Canada is because his parents had recently become divorced. His parents’ splitting is the main cause of his instability. At first Brian shows us his fear, frustration and anger. By the end of his experience of being in the wilderness most of those characteristics had changed. Brian does not only learn lessons about survival in the wilderness but life in general.

The exposition of Hatchet begins with a thirteen year old boy named Brian on his way from New York to Canada on a two person plane to see his father. Brian’s parents recently divorced and Brian is really disheartened about the situation he calls the reason why they broke. Before to long on the plane the pilot suffers a heart attack and dies leaving Brian to land the plane this is when rising action begins . Somehow Brian lands the plane in a crash-landing and only has a few bumps and bruises. With Brian the only one alive he would have to find food and shelter to survive against nature. Since prehistoric times, survival was mankind's top priority whether it be killing your peer for food or to attempt to escape the inevitability of death. This also includes endangering the life of others for oneself's own safety. Due to these reasons many people would characterize survival or “Survival of the Fittest” to the term “selfish”. Furthermore, survival is selfish because people endanger the lives of others and try to save themselves which is a natural human instinct known as “self preservation”.

Survival is living on the hope that better things are yet to come in your life. Right now in our country people survive because of hope and the belief that people are good and they will help them out. People survive when they are homeless on the streets only because of the people who are good at heart and give them food or money to buy clothing for the winter. Gerta survived because of her family and friends. Anne Frank survived because she believed that “Despite all the evil going on in the world I still believe that all people are good at heart.”

The first example of the resilience of the human spirit is Liesel dieing at old age after everything she went through. Markus Zusak in The Book Thief writes,”I traveled to Sydney and took Liesel away”(549). Liesel dies at an old age with her husband, three kids, and grandkids. She died far from Himmel Street, at Australia. Liesel survived losing her mom, dad and her brother. Liesel had to leave and create new friends while getting adjusted to her new mom and dad. Also, Liesel had to let go of her new parents, best friend Rudy, Max, and everyone who died during the bombing of Himmel Street. Liesel survived everything to once die of old age instead of any cause of disaster
