The common theme of courage can be found in “I Escaped a Violent Gang,” and “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote!” Susan has the courage to stand up for woman rights and Ana in “I Escaped a Violent Gang” stood up for the truth which took courage to do. But both texts share different moods. The mood in “I Escaped a Violent Gang” was more violent and abusive compared to “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote” which is a more uplifting mood filled with determination. The sad reality is that society does not take a minute to step out of their shoes and try to understand why someone becomes a gang member. Throughout Barking to the Choir, two common themes that arise is the lack of love, and growing up with a rough childhood. For many, survival becomes the priority, especially if they have siblings to look out for. Thus, gang life is not an ideal choice but rather a lucrative option. Prior to being assigned the reading of the memoir “Always Running”, by Luis Rodriguez, I had never given much thought on juveniles involved in gang life. Rodriguez achieved success as an award-winning poet; sure the streets would no longer haunt him - until his own son joined a gang. Rodriguez fought for his child by telling his own story in the vivid memoir, “Always Running.” “Always Running” is the compilation of events Luis experienced during his youth in San Gabriel. The theme of the book is to always strive for the best things in life and to always take a stand for what you believe. Lured by the seemingly invincible gang culture of East L.A., he witnessed countless shootings and beatings, as well as senseless acts of street crime against his friends and family members. As a Latino in a poor neighborhood, Luis struggled through criticism, stereotypes, and mistreatment. With the help of his mentor, Chente, Luis saw a way out through education and the power of word to successfully break free from years of violence and desperation.

Throughout all of history, there has been a plethora of women’s rights activists. Although it might not seem like it, each and everyone of them has made a difference for women. One woman in particular once said “There will never be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” This was a very wise and helpful woman- Susan B. Anthony. She was herself a women’s activist and was also a social reformer.
Susan B. Anthony’s speech on women’s rights to vote explains the fact that women deserve the right to vote in America just as much as men do. Upon giving this speech, Anthony was recently arrested for voting in the most recent presidential election. By giving this speech, she intended to prove the innocence of herself and all women trying to vote. Anthony first makes the point that women are equal citizens to men. Then she makes several grievances to the Constitution, arguing that the document protects the rights of all citizens of the United States of America, even quoting it. Finally, she points out that one of these protected rights is that to vote, stressing her point that as an American citizen, she is entitled to her right to vote. These
