Sustainability is the development to meet current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (WCED, 1987). Today, sustainability is being incorporated into business strategies, as organisations begin to adopt a sustainability strategy. This strategy is involving organisational operations to be sustainable, such as reducing pollution, each organisation identifies sustainability slightly differently and it is reflected in their strategy which is designed and implement. Tony Abbott is an example of an older worker who does not understand the concept of sustainability, he refused to acknowledge our generations part in climate change, the newer generation who are taught these concepts can understand our part in climate change, whereas Tony Abbott could not. Therefore, training and development will be impacted heavily as firstly employees will need to learn what sustainability and accept it before an organisation is able to successfully implement a sustainable strategy (Noe & Winkler, 2012 pp. 38).

Organisations which are adopting a sustainability strategy are trying to manage the current landscape whilst shaping the future landscape as are Westpac (Westpac Group 2015). A sustainability strategy is identifying the issues and goals of the organisation, mapping out a plan both short term and long term. And outlining how they plan to make sustainable choices. Sustainable choices include screening suppliers, and changing aspects such as their employment practices. Organisations are adopting sustainable strategy’s more so as pressure grows from legal perspectives, the economic benefits for an organisation include more revenue and cost reduction opportunities. Environmentally it gives them opportunity to conserve energy, resources whilst reducing pollution and waste.
