My Lewis & Clark’s education, will always be represented by opportunity. I have never felt a limit on anything I can do here. There are always places to grow and understand myself and what I want from my education. Lewis & Clark is providing me with the building blocks I need to construct the solid well rounded base of knowledge I need before I can pursue a more concentrated path. Throughout my life as a child and teenager, I was told by my parents that they worked really hard to get to the safe town and community that we lived in. Growing up in Pacific Grove, California gave me lots opportunities that I didn’t even know I obtained. Unless it had happened to me personally, I didn’t really understand the full picture of what others had to go through. Having dyslexia, the only subject I felt I really excelled in was art. After high school, I still had no idea what I wanted to do for a career or even a major. Monterey Peninsula College has boosted my confidence by showing me that I can be and do much more. Two years ago I would never have guessed that I would be applying to the University of Washington.

I believe a liberal arts education would enable me to be well rounded and acquainted with life around me. There is beauty in the way languages, sciences, and arts all come together to give us a taste of this world. I specifically desire to go to Hillsdale because I believe the classes will challenge me and push me beyond what I perceived possible. I desire the best education I can receive and believe Hillsdale is the place that offers it. I want to learn how to defend liberty and pursue truth not just while I am in school, but also after I graduate. I am confident Hillsdale will equip me to stand up for what I believe, interpret and discern truth, and give be a excellent understanding of the world in which I live.

In tenth grade, I moved four hours away from my friends and family to attend a public, residential high school for the arts: the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH). The school, open to South Carolina students upon audition, offers intense arts study with strong academic classes. Each teacher is passionate about the subjects and students they teach, and every student is devoted to their studies because they truly want to be at school. It has become much more common in the United States to turn on the news and learn about yet another shooting. Typically, the violence involves the criminal acquiring a firearm that they should not have been permitted to have, and attacking someone defenseless- either because they could not access their weapon in time, or for another reason. The increased frequencies of such tragic events have made many Americans wonder how much tighter gun restrictions to be to prevent them from continuing. They also wonder how tight gun restrictions can be before they become unconstitutional, or even if the 2nd Amendment should continue to exist. The Amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, and the right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

I’m writing to you today to express my concerns regarding immigration reform. Recently, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made insulting remarks regarding Mexican immigrants stating “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” When he speaks about Mexicans he is referring to the worst stereotypes of Mexicans. I aspire to attend the Clark Atlanta University because it is a symbol for past and future generations of educational and operational excellence. Clark Atlanta University is the hub of African American leadership and educational expansion, and with the constant policing of the community and poaching of black culture in today’s society, it is significant that I achieve an education that represents myself and the world with which I am familiar and intend to change for the better.

However, I am grateful that I have been able to identify the weak points in my learning efforts so early in my academic career and also been able to implement changes to them. The way in which I study is drastically changing and I have already seen positive improvements because of that. The University of Pennsylvania has one resource that no other establishment in the world can offer to me: the highest caliber of intellectuals in my field. Given that I intend on attending the Wharton School of Business and with the goal of becoming a financial manager, and then rising further along corporate ladder, I must be at the absolute forefront of the field and gain as many connections as I can along the way.
