Information can be shared and communicated in a variety of ways. Public speaking and formal presentations are common methods of communication that any leader will need to master regardless of their profession. There are times when it can be difficult to stay away during a presentation. However, a dynamic speaker can keep the audience engaged and interested in the information being shared. Improving presentation style is achievable with the right amount of planning, organizing, and by getting to know your audience. Observing other presenters is another great way to improve personal presentation skills.
Sylvia Getman, former Chief Executive Officer at The Aroostook Medical Center, is a fantastic public speaker and a person worth emulating. There are many positive attributes that make Sylvia a great speaker. She is a great story teller with a talent for personalizing the material in a way that unites her with the audience. “The most crucial part of a presentation is the introduction” (Haynes, 2016, p. 119). Recently, when presenting at a local hospital, Sylvia began by sharing a childhood memory of vacationing to Maine with her family.

As a way to recognize areas of opportunity, I will request to have my next small and large group presentations video-taped. Video-taping the presentation will allow for personal reflection and recognition of strengths and weaknesses. I will ask a co-worker to keep track of how many ahs and ums I use and set a personal goal for eliminating these from any of my verbal presentations. I will also begin using the audience analysis worksheet provided in the textbook (Haynes, 2016, pp. 144-146). This advance planning will allow me to be better prepared for the larger group presentations. Allowing more time for practice and rehearsals will also allow for a more fluid presentation and perhaps even get me to move away from the podium every once in a
In the eleven chapter of A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking, the authors talk about
Transmitting information is crucial when it comes to motivational speaker. Why? Because you are exchanging information, to your audience that must be effective and reliable so the audience could relate. The subject that’s
First of all, to be put in a group of individuals that I had never met or interacted with before was always going to be difficult. The process of getting to know them better and finding the strengths and weaknesses of each team member was hard at first but the more we worked on the presentation, the better we became at communicating and getting the
First, I will start with the aspects that I have exceled at during my informative speech. The first strength would be the use of my sources and how I included them and cited them in the presentation. Overall I found 6 great sources which helped be better
More effective the presentation more will be the chances of selection of your idea. Presentation does not include only words you speak but it also include how you deliver them. Tone, gestures and confidence plays crucial role in presentation. Everyone gets nervous during presentation but effective communicator have ability to show appropriate behavior according to the situation (Interpersonal skills). During my presentation cultural sensitivity was the issue as I did not show it. I am an international student, I have different accent and I speak English little faster than normal. Because of that sometimes audience could not understand what I speak. But to become an effective communicator I have to adjust myself according to this new
The audience receiving communication makes a different in the way you engage with others and how they interpret your communication. You must understand the level of formality for your contributions for example a business presentation will require formal
Public speaking has always been very hard for me, I've never been the type to stand in front of an audience and speak or do a presentation. No matter how many times I've done presentations I've always get nervous or shy and always forget what I rehearsed. In the military I was training Nco, everytime we had a new marine check in to our unit or are shop. I would be the one to give them and the A presentation on what is expected of them and also give them information about the unit and our shop. In my opinion the Marine Corp prepared me for public speaking, especially if you where lower rank and your senior enlisted would throw you to the wolves and send you up there to give the
A speaker that's more dynamic than others requires comfortable, confident and experience. The whole purpose is to engage the audience and have them understand what you are conveying. I too believe it's more an art than science. Though depending on what type of presentation you are performing, you must be professional. Engaging with an audience takes body language, confidence, interaction and delivering your message with ease. I believe you must rehearse and practice your presentations before delivering for it should be as smooth as possible.
I took a public speaking class at NAU; however, I merely enrolled in this course because it was a requirement and I failed to fully embrace the meaning of the concept. This capstone, on the other hand, has accomplished in convincing me of the true power in communication. Professor Stroh arranged for several guest speakers, each with their own unique communication style, to address our class. I admired the abilities of each speaker and acquiring their skillset is a primary goal I have for the future. For example, Paul Melcher spoke eloquently, his lecture was well-structured, and he did not rely on notes for support. Consequently, I will strive to incorporate his strengths as a speaker in my effort to establish a dialogue with
The intended audience for the presentation is identified and their level of understanding of the presentation topic is assessed
Presenting is one’s way of telling others about a topic. Whether they be wish to be enlighten by the knowledge or be shown more about a topic that someone has already knowledge of, presenting gives information in different ways to captivate an audience. TED talk is one way of this, a website made of many presentations of different topics.
Each participant had already been evaluated for public speaking as part of an interview process. However, they had “utterly failed in several, if not all aspects of public speaking” according to their managers. On completion of the training program, the participants’ public speaking skills were evaluated in the form of an achievement test. The participants were given the same business topic that was used at the interview performance to create an outline and deliver a 15-minute speech to an audience.
In public speaking of any form to a diverse group of individuals, my main consideration as the speaker is my concentration on the audience that I am speaking to. In starting an effective presentation,
Our presentation slides focuses more on pictures, charts and key-points for visual aid. By keeping the slides simple, audiences can focus more on the speaker. The videos uploaded by the Centre for English Language Communication department tell us our weaknesses which we do not realize by ourselves. Reflecting on my first and second presentation through videos and feedbacks from Ms. Christine has helped me
If you have the opportunity, go to the room ahead of time and practice your presentation. Actually speak the words and choreograph your movement.
