“I’m so sad that I don’t have Kelly. But I’m so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring.” In the movie Cast Away Tom Hanks plays the role of Chuck Noland an executive for Fed Ex who is obsessed with time. Chucks plane crashes over the Pacific Ocean during a storm leaving him stranded on an island. Chuck has to face many challenges through the years physically, mentally, and emotionally. After realizing that he would not be rescued anytime soon Chuck starts to think about survival. Another person’s body who was on the plane floats onto the island as well as some Fed Ex packages. Chuck takes the person’s shoes and buries the body, I think Chuck does this because he knows he will need shoes in order to survive on the island. Chuck also starts to open some of the packages something he would have never done if it weren’t for necessity. Chuck becomes very grateful for the thinks in boxes like the flashlight, the volleyball, and the ice skates. All of those items contribute to him surviving on the island. The setting of the movie shows us the difference from Chuck not being appreciative or grateful to later actually valuing things. When Chuck is still in Memphis the only thing he cares about is time and living by the clock. Chucks lifestyle seems very busy giving little to no time to enjoy what is happening around him. When he is on the island the only noises we hear are those of nature, everything is very peaceful and quiet. Often times we see Chuck sleeping in a cave when it is raining or on the sand. All of the things he once had back in Memphis which he probably didn’t appreciate like a bed or a roof above his head are gone. Kelly’s character helps us realize how unappreciative Chuck was about their relationship. Chuck was at a family Christmas dinner with Kelly when he got a phone call about having to leave to fix a
Chuck Noland is a FedEx worker who is obsessed with his job, a workaholic. He is trapped in the captivating life of time, power, and structured planning. He is always working against the clock. His job has taken over his life. He is so deep into his personal career that he doesn 't spend enough time with his fiancé Kelly, his time is always put into working all day. Chuck also has a problem with socializing with his co workers. He treats his co workers in a more boss-to-employee relationship instead of a friend-to-friend relationship. Chuck is involuntarily sent on a quest when his plane crashes into an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. During his quest, Noland has to realize
Movies are meant to evoke emotion in a person and attach them to the story being told on the big screen. Writer, William Broyles, Jr., in his movie, Cast Away, shares the story of a desperate man, Chuck Noland, trying to survive after being stranded on an island. Broyles’s purpose is to make the audience feel for Chuck and share the same feeling that he is going through. He adopts a sad and serious tone in order to do this that allows the mature audience to show emotion towards Chuck. The ways he makes the audience feel for him include: repetition, personification, and camera angle/ sad music. With all of these combined, Broyles is able to manipulate the audience into feeling for Chuck.
Another character development showed an example in the move, “Spirited Away” when Master Haku, a boy in the spirit world who assisted Chihiro seemed as though he couldn’t be trusted; however, the scene flipped where Haku was shown as a loving caring person. Additionally, in “Ponyo” an example was also shown of Sosuke, a little boy helping Ponyo when she was trapped in a jar; at first, the way the director depicted that scene, it seemed as if the boy was going to hurt Ponyo which turned out not to be the case, that he too, like Haku was a loving caring human being. From the narrator’s point of view all of the characters looked suspicious, that some of them needed something; towards the end of the movies, the audiences could tell that the director was trying to alter the human perceptions.
“One never learns how the witch became wicked, nor whether that was the right choice for her, is it ever the right choice? Does the devil ever struggle to be good again, or if so is he not a devil?” Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West tells the story of the green girl named Elphaba who grew up to become one of the most iconic evil characters in history. While telling her story, Maguire incorporates symbolism and similar senses of style, genre, and theme to give his words deeper meaning and to capture the essence of his characters.
Jack originally saw the island as unkind and unwelcoming, but then got used to it, and became one with the animal like behavior. He was the source of many of the issues on the island and started off as a plain, boring and caring church boy. “Inside the floating cloak, he was tall….his face was ugly without silliness” (20). He began on the island with a cloak and his choir boys. He did not seem very happy and had nothing but drained emotion. This gave the idea that Jack started off stubborn and grouchy. He was seen without a smile; dull and down. He eventually let loose and let go of his cloak along with his old views on life. Jack started to let the island get
Castaway Rough Draft Four major things in Castaway were: symbolism, the importance of communication, using nature for good, and abusing nature. These were all very major keys points in Castaway. They all had their own part in the movie. There were many examples of how Chuck’s job focuses on communication throughout the film, Castaway.
The movie “Cast Away” tells the story of the character Chuck Nolan. This movie shows how his life was going up and down through the stages Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
Chuck escapes the island not because he is strong enough or smart enough, but because he had no choice but to hope in which he put all of his faith into an inanimate object that kept him going. Chuck doesn’t learn to hope in himself, because his hope came just at the moment he realizes he is unable to save himself from the tropical prison. It is in the nature of human condition when all else fails hope is automatically triggered in a fight or flight
The tree is a symbol in the first marking period for many reasons. For one, in the fall, a trees leaves are starting to fall and the tree might die. As we see in Melinda, she is falling apart in every way and doesn’t know what to do with herself during these first few weeks in school. The quote, “I am an outcast,” sends an immediate message to the reader that Melinda is starting off the season fallen and dying, just like a tree.
The next phase of the film begins with a smooth transition between the fire and the water. We see Chuck, long-haired and slim, spearing a fish with considerable skill. He eats the fish while staring either into the distance or into the water. He seems to have accepted his life.
At the very end of the movie, Chuck reaches self-actualization, the very top of the hierarchy. We can see this when Chuck makes the realization he “has to keep breathing no matter what the tide brings in”; he is content with his place in
Communication, one of the most important things we humans need to mentally survive. Even though it is so important most people have failed to master the art of communicating correctly and effectively. This is perfectly outlined in the movie ‘Castaway’. Throughout the movie ‘Castaway’ you see many different use of communication. You see how Chuck uses non-verbal communication to show emotions.
In castaway chuck noland is a fedex executive who goes gets into a plane crash and ends up on an island. Chuck has to learn how to survive with only the clothes he has on his back, a few packages that had come ashore, and the land of the island. Chuck is stranded for four years by himself or with his “friend” wilson who is a volleyball he had
Man versus nature, no questions asked. Noland was stuck on an island, so clearly he had to make some decisions based on how the weather of the island treated him. Have you ever had to start a fire without a match or any other 21st century tool you rely on for you Friday night bonfires? Try it, and I promise you’ll never want to do it again. Chuck had to use only the branches around him to start a fire. It took multiple tries, but eventually he figured it out. Noland figured a lot of things out as he continued to spend time on the island. He figured out how to find food, even when there wasn’t much around him. He took basic knowledge and did what he had to do to survive. Chuck Noland is a hero when it comes to surviving in nature.
The movie Cast Away directed by Robert Zemeckis shows how the main actor, chuck, faces a tragedy and tries to get his life back to how it use to be. Chuck Noland is used to going on business trips due to his occupation, despite having a girlfriend who he has dated for a long period of time, they still plan to get married after their schedules become less hectic. Chuck is used to travelling; however, his last experience led him to the lowest point in his life after the plane crashes in the ocean. Chuck spends many years surviving on a desert island and has to deal with certain situations that test him mentally, physically and emotionally. After chuck finds a way to get back home to his girlfriend, he realizes that things are not how they use
