In the poem “Legacies” written by Nikki Giovanni is about a little girl that can't say what she really feels. Her grandmother wants her granddaughter to be independent, but the granddaughter refuses to be. Basically, she doesn't want her grandmother's spirit to be hurt by telling her that she doesn't want to make rolls with her. Although her grandmother is irate. She wanted to have some family time with her! In the poem, “If I can't stop one heart from breaking” written by Emily Dickinson is about how if you help other people or things, and not only think about yourself all the time, then you will not live a harsh, and careless life. Also you may not be able to fix everything or stop something, but if you at least try it's almost worth the same thing. In the poem Emily is showing that is she does all …show more content…
Emily dickinson uses, the phrase, “If I can stop one heart from breaking”, to symbolize that someone can save a heart from breaking. In other words this means that, if someone is trying to commit suicide you may be able to stop them and help them live better. On the other hand unlike Nikki Giovanni who uses symbolism to convey theme and get the readers to predict what is happening, Emily Dickinson is trying to stir up empathy. The poet Emily, also uses, “ If I can ease one life from the aching, Or cool one pain”. In this peace she is trying to symbolize that she doesn't want anyone to have a hard time and want everyone to live the life they deserve. Emily could have also used symbolism to show the characters motivation. Dickinson is trying to build a mood and a good one not a bad one because everyone wants to live good. While others might think that Emily is trying to convey the theme, I believe that she is trying to stir up empathy because I feel really bad for the the person who has an aching life, a painful life, and a breaking
Emily Dickinson was a great American Poet and one of her well-known poems she published was “If I Should Die”. She wrote over eighteen hundred poems and about a dozen of them were published. This poem is basically written from a perspective of assuming what would happen if one was to die. The speaker of the poem shows death is normal through the use of imagery and personification. “The Stroke” is a poem which is as intense as to how he (Thomas) felt Death come to him, but instead he would lie about what he felt if someone were to ask him.
Nikki Giovanni gained most of her fame during the 1960s and 1970s, when she was expelled from her college and started exploring and investigating the world. She is well known for her more militant and violent poetry during that time period, but now she has become a more personal poet. A quote said by her could relate exactly to her themes in poetry and life. “A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you're in and take advantage of it.” As of today, she is seen as one of the most influential African American women in the world. Some may say that Nikki Giovanni’s change in style and themes in her poems from militant and harsh, to emotional and family-oriented were linked to the emotional changes in her life.

In Emily Dickinson’s poem “Pain—has an Element of Blank” symbolism, as well as poetic devices are used to discuss the theme of pain not having a beginning, but it’s always there and with it brings complications. Literary devices such as personification, and irony are used by Emily to convey the meaning of pain, and how it is everywhere. The future, and the past both are used in the poem as symbols that represent where pain is and where it will be.
The simile adds to the meaning of the poem because it allows the reader to understand the contentment of a person who is hurt. In the poem, “Heart! We will forget him”, Emily uses personification as she talks
In the poem, there are two lines that stand out the most. Emily Dickinson writes, "The sweeping up the heart/and putting love away" (Dickinson lines 5-6). These lines show how numb Dickinson felt at the time as the lines feel very casual and distant. These lines give the overall feeling of sadness, depression, and distraction.
Emily Dickinson a modern romantic writer, whose poems considered imaginative and natural, but also dark as she uses death as the main theme many times in her writings. She made the death look natural and painless since she wanted the reader to look for what after death and not be stuck in that single moment. In her poems imagination play a big role as it sets the ground for everything to unfold in a magical way. The speakers in Dickinson’s poetry, are sharp-sighted observers who see the inescapable limitations of their societies as well as their imagined and imaginable escapes. To make the abstract tangible, to define meaning without confining it, to inhabit a house that never became a prison, Dickinson created in her writing a distinctively elliptical language for expressing what was possible but not yet realized. She turned increasingly to this style that came to define her writing. The poems are rich in aphorism and dense
Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous authors in American History, and a good amount of that can be attributed to her uniqueness in writing. In Emily Dickinson's poem 'Because I could not stop for Death,' she characterizes her overarching theme of Death differently than it is usually described through the poetic devices of irony, imagery, symbolism, and word choice.
As said previously, women in this time period had very limited ways of doing this. However, Emily had something that not many people had the luxury of claiming; she could write. She became a fantastic writer the minute she could create structured sentences. The ability to attain the power she was looking for was already found. Emily had the special ability of being able to arrange words as if they are puzzle pieces whose only purpose is to create an overall picture or concept. An example of this is when she described hope in the form of a bird as it relates to human nature (“’Hope’ is the Thing with Feathers” 123). She also once used a carriage ride to metaphorize the circle of life, immortality, and death (“Because I Could Not Stop for Death” 26). As previously stated, Emily’s power is displayed through her use of diction. Power itself is commonly associated with money or fame. However, money and fame do not equal power. As a young child, Emily comes to this realization along with knowing that her ability to possess an astounding use of diction and metaphors could get her exactly what she desired-powerful authority. However, metaphors and use of diction were not the only two characteristics of writing Emily chose to focus on. She also seemed to choose her themes very carefully. Dickinson repeatedly put a spotlight on thematic things such as death, loss, solitude, authority,
Today, many people undervalue the significance of emotion, often time ignoring them or try to suppress them. However, in her poems “Hope” and “Have You A Brook in Your Little Heart,” Emily Dickinson remarks that emotions important because they offer insight to one’s inner being. They wield one’s dynamic perspective, allowing one to expand their understanding their circumstances. By giving one sensations such as passion and joy, they give people motivation; they indicate one’s desires and guide them towards a meaning in life. Through the use of metaphors and symbolism in “Hope” and “Have You A Brook in Your Little Heart,” Dickinson illuminates the power of human emotion.
Bukowski was influenced by many writers before and around his time as he was published in the mid- to late-nineties. Those who influenced him include Albert Camus, E. E. Cummings, John Fante, Henry Miller, and some will argue Emily Dickinson. Both writers, Dickinson and Bukowski, touch upon death, writing from their graves, and saving the world through the sincerity of one person. Dickinson’s poem “If I can stop one heart from breaking” mirrors one of Bukowski’s most famous quotes “You begin saving the world by saving one person at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics.” His simple of idea that universal peace begins with one soul mimics the message in Dickinson’s verse.
Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, “The distant strains of triumph, Burst agonized and clear!” This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and three when she says, “To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need.” In this instance, nectar symbolizes success.
Many Germans could accept the fact that their country’s defeat in WWI whereas they argued that “backstabbing” of the Jews and the weaknesses from the beginning caused the front to collapse. They claimed that the Jews caused the spread of defeatism hence destroying the German army. The Germans argued that the Weimar Republic’s democracy was a government that had been constrain on Germany and not suited for the German way of life. They obeyed the Treaty of Versailles and paid reparations as revenge from the victors of WWI. This frustration caused the growth of right-wing groups in Germany such as the Nazi Party.
One of the prevalent themes of Emily’s work is death. Since she wrote about her inner world and troubles, death as a theme could not be avoided. Emily Dickinson had to face the losing friends to death. Several deaths of family members, including her mother, father and a nephew helped contribute to the theme in her poetry. These events affected her health but she found a way to cope with the idea of death with her poetry. She developed an attitude towards death, seeing it as a transition from mortality to immortality. She accepted its inevitability and tried to make
The two main drawbacks of presently developed bio-composites from its rival glass fiber composites are: poor moisture resistance and low impact strength. Recent research results show that there is some large lays either in pre-treatment of the fibers, engineering of fibers or in improving the chemistry while impregnating the fibers with the matrix
