In the play, OEDIPUS THE KING, Sophocles tells a story of Oedipus, king of Thebes. As the play begins Oedipus is seen as a bold character who will do anything to save Thebes. Throughout the play, Oedipus begins to realize that his actions have played a role in his fate. In the tragic play, OEDIPUS THE KING, Sophocles uses symbolism effectively in order to construct an effective story. The author convey’s this through the use of the crossroad and swollen foot. Sophocles makes many allusions to symbols in his play, predominantly through the main character, Oedipus. She describes where it takes place, “The country is called Phocis: two roads, one from Delphi and one from Daulia, come together and form one” (Sophocles 42). A crossroad is where various roads meet. The crossroad is an indication of a critical moment of Oedipus’ start of the prophecy spoken by Apollo. When Oedipus is at the crossroad, he has a decision to make: which road to take? Once at a crossroad, the decision made can change your life. Picking the right path is difficult and Oedipus is not sure which path is the right decision until he picks the path which determines his fate. Although the prophecy says that Oedipus is full of catastrophes, the crossroads symbolize that Oedipus has many alternative possibilities. Near the end of the play, Oedipus believes the crossroads rendered his fate when Oedipus says, “O three roads in the deep valley, you oak wood and you narrow pass where the three roads meet, you who soaked up my father’s blood, spilled by my hand—do you remember me? Although, Oedipus is seen as a hero to Thebes, he does find his true identity until the end of the play. Throughout the play, the crossroad plays a pivotal role in Oedipus’ fate and resembles many paths in which Oedipus could have followed. Despite the fact that Oedipus’ name means swollen footed, he is destined to suffer throughout his life.
