Back and forth till he finds himself in an imaginary world where luck exists in the form of a name. That name belonging to a Jockey. Back and forth till he knows where to plant his money so he can watch it grow. Back and forth till the sounds of the whispering house are silenced just long enough to hear the name the one to bring him luck, to bring him money and to bring him approval from his mother. A story about a boy, a gardener, a rocking horse, and a greedy mother. A mother whose only happiness in life comes from the amount of money in her bank account. A boy who wants nothing more than for his mother to love him and believe he truly possesses lucky. A gardener who instills the love for horse racing in a young boy teaching the benefits that come from betting on the winning racer. A rocking horse with the power to bring a young boy luck so his mother can finally one day approve of and love him. In the story the Rocking Horse Winner D. H. Lawrence expresses the theme through characterization and symbolism.
Lawrence uses characterization as the reader watches paul go from an innocent young boy to a madman. The only way to save his sanity was to become deaf to the sound, of the whispering house not to hate it's evil murmur but to ignore it. Instead he let it drive him insane. “Our house I hate our house for whispering.” (Lawrence 131) As the house continuously pleads for money reminding paul that he alone cannot please his mother and the only way to achieve her love is by
