Reflection Paper: Blood Diamond To buy expensive jewels or even be gifted one has always seemed ridiculous to me. To wear 10,000 dollars on your finger seems a bit gratuitous. Not only that but diamonds aren't that rare just hard to get and can be artificially made, unlike gold. For me, it has always been the symbol for why the trickle-down effect does not work. It is rich peoples priority to keep their money, to keep it in their family, not to pump it back into the economy. I have thought about the consequences of buying such an expensive piece, but I have never felt about the horrible process in how they are found bought and sold until watching the movie Blood Diamond (2006). The first scene of Blood Diamond is brutal to watch although it is fake violence it is portraying something real, the civil war in Sierra Leone. A war that is described as being funded by the illicit diamond trade. Leonardo Decaprio plays a South African mercenary, smuggling diamonds to sell back to the diamond industries in wealthy countries. A Mende fisherman played by Djimon Hounsou was taken from his home and separated from his family is forced to mine for diamonds. Djimon and Leonardo join together to try and recover a rare gem that Djimon lost in an attack. Jenifer Connelly plays an American journalist that helps the two men throughout their journey and also documents it. Jennifer Connelly goal in the movie can be summed up in the statement she says to Leonardo's character
