I chose The Veteran because I could tell it was a surrealist painting and because of that it would be relevant to the class. I also chose this painting because of the symbols of a war around the body and the empty landscape that is in the background. I chose The Javelin because of the figure and how it looked compared to everything else in the painting. The proportions of the painting really grabbed my attention because the figure was so much larger and everything else was smaller than it should have been. Claude Clark was born November 11, 1915 in Rockingham, Georgia. In 1935 with the help of his high school principal he got into and attended the Penna school of industrial arts (Clark, used for paragraph). After he graduated, he started working in the works public administration and through this he saw the influences of African art on modern European art. He then went on to build an art department at Talladega College, where he taught his students about traditional art forms. He died April 21, 2001 in Oakland, California. The composition of The Javelin has the main figure in the foreground of the painting with the other figures being higher up on a hill in the distance. Clark uses a very limited color range mostly sticking to green, brown, and blue. There is not much contrast in this painting; most of the colors are relatively dark. The way it was painted also has a sense of movement because the figure is about to throw a javelin. The balance of the painting looks off
