In modern dictionary, Empathy is the emotional identification with or surrogate experiencing of the thoughts, feelings, or pain of another (Dictionary.com, 2017). It is the ability for which we stand in others' shoes, to see with their eyes, and to feel with their hearts. Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing. Most times, instead of showing empathy to others, we mostly have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own experience or feeling (Rosenberg, n.d.).
Not to be confused with sympathy or compassion,
The big difference between the word "empathy" and its synonym "sympathy" and “compassion”
Empathy is one step further than sympathy which means feeling pitiful and sorrowful for someone else’s misfortune. More so, Empathy is one step behind compassion which means having a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken bymisfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to take away or ease the suffering.
So therefore, empathy is between sympathy and compassion in the sense in empathy that you actually take a step in giving out a helping hand and not just feeling sorrowful for the other person but actually taking a step in walking in
