One of the first things that should be discussed when talking about Panic Disorder, is that it is one of six major types of anxiety. This is important to understand because people often find themselves confusing the six because many of them are very similar and have overlapping symptoms. General anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder are the six main types of anxiety that will be discussed in this paper, but panic disorder will be the main focus.

I decided to do this paper mostly based on personal reasons. At a young age I was told by my physician that I was “probably suffering from some anxiety” multiple times growing up. It started with passing out at the doctor’s office even before the needle came out, and then progressed eventually into my school environment. When I was in 6th grade at a human growth and development lecture, I remember feeling odd as we talked about diseases etc. I blacked out and ended up going to the hospital because I hit my head so hard. After that, I was exempted from taking anymore human growth and development courses. This was pretty embarrassing as I remember being in middle school and my friends asking me why I didn’t have to participate etc. Thus I saw another doctor in my early teens who told me I was suffering from a from of panic anxiety.
