Synopsis
George, a MBA graduate who chose to work in ABC Consulting because he thinks his values are congruent to the organisation’s value. George was immediately assigned to a project team that includes Daniel and Janet. In the first team meeting, George was overwhelmed with the ideas that Daniel and Janet suggested. With the near coming of the review meeting, stress has driven George to work day and night to complete the report. Without feedback and guidance from his teammates, George worked independently and completed the whole task. After George submitted his final piece of work to Janet and having to open Janet’s email, Janet was criticizing his ideas. Because of this, George’s enthusiasm for his work gradually depleted. 1. Motivation:

Motivation is an initiative behaviour that provides guidance and goal orientation. Motivation can be divided into two types, extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation (Ryan 2016). Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory can be used clearly to identify the issue of motivation to affect individual’s behaviour. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory is divided in to five stages consisting of Physiological needs, Safety needs, Social needs also refers to basic needs, growth needs are refer to as Esteem needs and Self-Actualization. “Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfil the next one, and so on” (McLeod 2007). Basic needs must be satisfy before moving to a higher level which is growth needs and once growth needs is satisfy, one would be able to achieve self-actualization at the top.
Extrinsic motivation
“Extrinsic motivation refers to our tendency to perform activities for known external rewards, whether they be tangible (eg: money) or psychological (eg: praise) in nature” (Brown, Psychology of Motivation, 2007). Failure or punishment can be a factor that individual experience extrinsic motivation (Vitez 2016). In the case study, George satisfied both Physiological and Safety needs. For
