In the story “Thank You M’am” a poor and possibly homeless boy named Roger, wanted to buy some blue suede shoes but he didn’t have any money to buy them. When people are homeless they tend to ask for money or steal it to get what they want. He saw a lady he did not know, by the name of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, that he was going to steal the money from. He ran up beside her and tried to snatch the purse. It was a fail because, with his weight combined with the purse he became unbalanced and fell straight on the sidewalk. She then picked up Roger up by the shirt and demanded him to pick up her purse and give it to her. Mrs. Jones then took Roger back to her house to clean him up and feed him some diner. After she tested him to see
Emma Tiller shared a similar scene of traveling men asking for help at her door. Tiller states, “I had gone in my house and taken my husband’s old shoes and his clothes and some of em’ he needed em’ himself but, I didn’t feel he need em’ as bad… because that man was in a worser shape than he was in” (CITE). Tiller was stating that she had seen these men scavenging and invite them to stop at her home. Like Kitty, though she was personally not well-off, she gave something nice her husband had away.
The article “Homeless Samaritan to get house, dream truck, trust funds” begins by explaining how the two main characters of this story, Kate McClure from New Jersey and Johnny Bobbitt Jr. from Philadelphia, met. Since McClure was from New Jersey, she was not familiar with the area when she drove in Philadelphia, this resulted her to run out of gas on an Interstate 95 exit ramp late one night. Witnessing this situation, Johnny Bobbitt Jr., a homeless man, walked a few blocks and used up his last 20 dollars to buy her gas. Unfortunately (or fortunately), McClure did not have money on her to pay this man back at the time, but as the days passed on, she would return to the area and make sure he was doing fine, giving him money, food, and water.
In the reading, “The Lady in Red,” Richard LeMieux talks about how he was once successful businessman but then he became a homeless man after his business failed and had to beg for money as his last resort. When he was successful he would invite many people over for Thanksgiving and enjoy the luxury of spending money on more expensive food. Afterwards he ended up in his car with his dog and rationing his money on food and gas. Consequently he ran out of money and tried begging but there were people that ignored him or were rude because he was homeless. LeMieux wants people to understand that you should stay strong just like when disrespected by the man in the Porsche or the man that muttered about how worthless homeless people are LeMieux knew
In the story ”Thank You, M’am” Mrs. Jones did not live the life she had hoped for as a child, because of her troubled past she wants to show Roger a better life. Mrs. Jones is a lonely woman who needs someone to help and show kindness to. She does that in the story by taking Roger to her apartment instead of calling the cops she takes matter into her own hands. A flaw that Mrs. Jones shares with us in the story is trusting too easily. She leaves her purse and the front door open giving Roger the opportunity to escape with her money. Mrs. Jones has little money but from Roger's perspective she is a wealthy woman. Roger feels this way because he does not have a family. In the end, everybody wins because Roger gets his blue suede
One sunny day on the busy streets of Chicago, a homeless man walked down the sidewalks scowling at nearby street peddlers. He went by the name of Richard Walker, better known as Rich, which was very ironic. He walked down the sidewalks through different people, catching sections of their conversation. “Look at Rich! Don’t give that old homeless man any money!” Although Rich was well used to it, didn’t mean he took it lightly at all.
The instructor had the right to correct the misunderstanding of Richard, on the other hand, her choice of words and tone of voice was unforgivable. The overwhelming emotion to buy himself a daddy by quintupling his original amount caused him a grave mistake followed by a lesson he did not expect to learn at that moment. Her patience came to a halt when he offered a donation from his “daddy”. She then proceeded by slapping him with the cold truth by saying, “We are collecting this money for you and your kind, Richard Gregory. If your daddy can give fifteen dollars you have no business being on relief”, she then added, “We know you don’t have a daddy”. In that instance he became the center of attention. Helene quickly turned to see him with a teary eyes that showed sympathy towards him. There was much shame in the room, his eyes were full of tears which caused him to run away. From his perspective, it was as if everyone in the world witnessed his shame. His fellow classmates just felt sorry for him, but said nothing when the instructor lashed out at him. Now he understood that society was cruel to him by hosting their events such as the Worthy Boys Annual Christmas Dinner. It was if ignorance was a blessing rather than the harsh reality of his status. The jacket he received from welfare singled him out from the crowd not to mention it
“Thank You, Ma’am” is a short story about a young boy named Roger who meets a woman, Mrs. Jones, after an attempt to steal her pocketbook. After getting a hold of Roger Mrs. Jones decides that she won’t turn him into the police and wants to be a role model for Roger. In paragraph 15 it says, “‘You ought to be my son . I would teach you right from wrong…”’(Hughes 15) It’s obvious in this paragraph that Mrs. Jones wants to be a role model for Roger and she influences Roger to make better choices later in the text. Next, in “Doing the Right Thing” four football players enter an unlocked, closed store in New Jersey. They needed to purchase some items when they realized no employees were there in the store. They also realized they could get away with stealing the items they needed but they didn’t. Instead, they paid for the items and left for practice. The reason these young men had integrity was because they had family, their role models, they didn’t want to disappoint. The text says, “‘If there’s one thing about parenting that I’ve learned it’s that the best gift you

In the story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, treats Roger like his son and helps him stop stealing others stuff. In paragraph 44 it says, “When they were finished eating Mrs. Jones gave him ten dollars so he could buy his shoes that he wanted. This supports the claim because in paragraph 44it says that Mrs. Jones gave him ten dollars for the shoes he wanted, and told him to not make the same mistake of stealing her pocketbook or someone else's. Another piece of evidence from paragraph 25 is the tall woman told Roger to go to the sink and wash his dirty face. This supports the claim because in paragraph 25, the woman lets him wash his face and then asks if he wants to eat. So that's how Mrs. Luella Bates
One may steal an item from another not expecting any trust or help from the person who they are stealing from. In the short story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, describes two strangers, Mrs. Jones and Roger, crashing into one another and how they help one another. The story takes place during the Great Depression in the streets of Harlem, New York. Both characters show traits that stand out in the story. In the short story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones is firm, motherly, and wise and teaches Roger to never steal.
In the story, Mrs. Luella bates Washington jones was walking home when a boy named Roger came around the corner and tried to steal Mrs. Jones’ purse, or pocketbook. When he did the strap broke and he fell to the ground. Mrs. Jones used her foot to hold he down and then she picked him up and told him to pick up her pocketbook. While he did she asked him why he tried stealing her pocketbook and he said that he didn’t have any money and that he wanted a pair of new shoes. She saw how dirty he was and ask if anyone told him to wash his face or anything and he responded that there is no one at home. Mrs. Jones realized that and said, still holding him, that if he was her son that she’d make him wash that face and then she started walking home dragging
“The robb’d that smiles, steals something from the thief; He robs himself that spends a bootless grief.” This paradox is demonstrated through the short story, Thank You, Ma’am, as a woman that goes by Mrs. Jones. Helps this fourteen year old straggly boy, that goes by the name Roger find the real answer to life. As Mrs. Jones takes him into her home, even though the boy tried to steal her purse. She teaches him that you don’t need to steal if you want something in life. You could just ask, because someone would be willing to show an act of kindness. She forgives the boy for trying to steal her purse, because everyone sins and no one's perfect. We all have sinned and we just have to live with
First of all, Mrs. Jones was kind to Roger throughout the entire story. This shows that she wants him to know that she cares about him. At the very end of the story, Mrs. Jones gave Roger ten dollars to buy blue suede shoes. “When they were finished eating she got up and said ‘Now here take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.”’ This shows how much Mrs. Jones truly cares about Roger and how kind she is to him because she gave him money for a nice pair of shoes he wanted. In conclusion, Mrs. Jones shows that she cares for Roger by being kind. She shows this by giving money
