I return to week 2 of this course and my systematic process for ethical decision making. I would first “maintain control” of myself and think. Then analyze the situation and all the fact before deciding on an action to take. Maintain control means to not overreact and to remain calm. Maintain control also means to clarify the facts and rely on my past experiences and education to make a decision on what to do or say next to Marcie. Note: this would have been thought through before going to my supervisor. Today, I listened to an interesting podcast that discussed depression and suicide. Be warm and try to see the world through their eyes. Empathic listening is a disarming technique. It’s stroking them without trying to help or reassure them in someway. Well meaning people try to cheer people up and that often makes things worse. You have to surrender to what they are saying and make it safe for them to open up. Be in agreement with them. See the world through their eyes and resist the compulsion to give them help unless they ask you directly for help (Burns, 2016). Regarding suicide, Dr. Burns said that the older you are and if depressed, the more likely you are to commit suicide. However, people of all ages can fall victim to suicide. Teenagers do it mainly for attention (Burns, 2016). According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, it’s the 10th leading cause in the U.S. and 44,193 suicides occur each year. Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska are the top 3 states for suicide. I live in Alabama. We are ranked 24th. Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women. White males accounted for 7 of 10 suicides in 2015. Firearms account for almost 50% of all suicides. The rate of suicide is highest in middle age, white men in particular (2017).
