Cell-mediated immunity is part of the immune system that uses specific cells, such as cytotoxic (which is the primary cell responsible for the cell-mediated immunity), as well as memory, helper and suppressor T-cells instead of antibodies which are activated by MHC proteins (as seen in B-cells). They are produced in red bone marrow and recognize infected cells and have the ability to activate B-cells and T-cells. When specific antigens present themselves they are able to destroy them. A chimaera or chimera, is an organism that contains a mix of different genetically tissue and cells coming from two different zygotes. This can occur because of different fertilized eggs coming together. During this coming together period, ‘populations’ are created which have their own tissues and blood types. This results in them having their own DNA. Haruko Obokata was the primary researcher in using STAP cells (stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency). She injected a blastocyst with these STAP cells that were generated from neonatal mice. As a result, chimaeric mice were born. The mice developed normally and even had their own offspring. The reason that Obokata did this was to demonstrate a new way for germline transmission. Germline transmission is essential because it is necessary for pluripotency.
