Since the inception of writing, many artists have used their creative penmanship to express themselves. From journal articles to poems, countless texts have been written and printed. Among these writers exist an elite upper class of creative artists who dip their pens into poetry. Throughout time, the art of writing poetry has proven to be a useful and insightful manner of propagating ideas and emotions. Poetry posses an advantage in the way that its artists can create relatable landscapes for readers to enjoy. Over time, many poets have made their mark on the art form and advanced its movement. Modernism was the first poetic movement to defy social norms and create controversy over its gritty nature. Although the movement had been around for some time, it really began to flourish around the time of the First World War. Poets like Elliot used the global conflict in his writings and expressed his thoughts in his poems. Modernism is a poetic movement, which set the stage for a lot of other poetic schools to rise up. T.S Elliot was one of the poets who aided in the breaching of Modernism and he contributes many insightful poems to the genre. His edgy dark poem “The Wasteland” is, as many of his poems were, a strong social criticism. Traditional poetry followed guidelines and respected regulations. Poets would chose to write in a certain style and keep with is as their poem progressed. Elliot went against the grain, as he was famous for doing, in his poem “The Wasteland”. One of the big areas about Elliot’s poem that sets it apart from other poets is his use of man voices and how he differentiates them. Elliot has been critiqued for having too many speakers in his poem, who take the reigns without warning or background context. This not only separates the poem from traditional fidelity but also adds a level of reality to the message within. Another aspect of the poem, which indicates to the Modernists traits of Elliot’s writing, is that the form is constantly changing. Lines in the poem go from five syllables to seven syllables, from what seems to be iambic pentameter, to free verse writing. The poem does not stick to a conventional tone throughout the entirety. Something that Elliot does well throughout the poem with the many voices is that he is making it difficult for readers to relay the opinions to him. By this, Elliot puts forth so much information, expressed by so many different speakers, that it is not easy to know what opinions and ideas are his own, and which are there just for create atmosphere.
